Old knacker now "Classic cars"

I bought my Porsche 924 for a few hundred quid about 20 years ago, I just kept it going, do the odd show in it and it is now worth something like a few thousand. I just like driving it, it's a pretty car that always gets lazily dismissed "poor man's Porsche" and such like but they are quite rare now. "How Many Left" says that when I bought it there were over 5,000 now there are fewer than 700.

As ICE cars disappear into the history books get yourself a cheap classic, they're great fun, you meet nice people out in it and it is very "green". Oh, and by any measure driving a 40-50 year old Porsche is greener than any EV...
Agree totally.
I do about 5k miles a year in my old beemer. Love driving it and people often stop and talk to you about how they or a relative had one back in the day.

For clarity I have an rx8 now, still pretty cool and a 2ltr diesel mondeo, not so cool. I have had 3 mondeos, a vectra, a golf, a 1.3l mk1 capri, loved this one, a puegot of some description, the maestro van den plas, the one that talked and had a full digital dashboard, crap car, cool features, mk4 spitfire. Think thats it.

Quite a mixed bag
Older cars just seemed to have more personality and were certainly more individual. My XC40 twin recharge is ridiculously quick, but quite boring.

I am just watching Wheeler Dealers and they've just paid 4k for a knackered fiesta 1300.
It made me think about ( knackered and second hand) cars I've owned that are now worth somethng, which is pretty much every car I bought in the 1980s.

I've had a fiesta 1300, BMW M 5 shark nose,
Reliant Scimiter and my bother had a Capri 2.8i
My neighbour in London in the 80's was selling a Mercedes gull wing from the 1950s , they wanted a few thousand for it but this was too much for me back then, if only!
I wonder if other board members have had "classics" and if they've missed an opportunity or lived to regret selling.
I had an RS Cosworth back in the late 90s it was a period when there was plenty and you could pick them up for buttons, boy races drove them to destruction, fast forward to currently and go for crazy money decent ones 50k plus.

They go for all kinds of prices. At auction 75k is possible for a good example.

They weren't very good in my opinion. They got popular because increasing the bhp was cheap and easy.

My Dad owned a MK2 Focus RS for many years

Whilst it's far from a banger They are now going down the classic route and worth a fortune. He said he sold it for 10k as my mum said it ' wasn't practical ' lol.

You are looking at 25-30k now for a 50-60k miles one. Thanks mum 😂

The capri was lovely to drive but the best car I have ever driven is the rx8, they are just so fragile, mechanically, not to mention the 22 mpg.
I had an rx8 when on song it was phenomenal, used to chuck some weird faults at me though. Wife reckons I was getting single figure mpg at times 😍.
Unfortunately used as a family car and started getting the common engine issues, so without any off street parking it went on eBay 😩.

I did an engine rebuild at 75k miles, its now on 99k miles and has an oil metering issue which I am fixing, but I thought I would do a total rebuild on the car from bare shell up.

The engine rebuild cost me close to 3 grand as I had to source some rotor housings as mine were badly scored.

Single figure mpg is pretty common if you drive them hard, which lets be honest, you do. I would get 22mpg on a run up to boro on the M1 in clear traffic, doing 70mph. When cold you get 5mpg, though they do warm up very quickly.

Do you need any spares? There's a RX8 left on a drive near where I live. Owner might want shot

I don't think so. I have the oil metring pump and the rest is body work, carpets, refurb on the seats, wheels and switching the satnav for a tablet.

I will likely need inner sills and possibly outer sills but they are cheap enough new.

Once owned an MG Metro.

Definitely not a classic due to the fact is was completely sh*t. Wouldn't have survived to this day, expect it would have simply crumbled to dust.
Another one who had an MG Metro....was my first car and was green with red trim (which I added to with extra red accessories). **** knows what my 21 year old self was thinking!

My dad had a Triumph Herald and then a Mk 1 Capri when I was a kid. He then upgraded to a Mk II (and that's what I learned to drive in).

Stylish to look at, especially the Mk1, anything with an RS badge tends to increase in value.

I didnt really want to post mine as i always regret selling but its too late now, so i had
1996 Mini Cooper S
Ford Escort Mk1 twin cam
and three Peugeot 205 GTIs.
I will always regret selling the Mini. On my retirement i will try to pick one up but they are expensive now.

I had a mark 2 XR2i, still think about that car, young, free and no commitments...driving to Whitby with my girlfriend...as I get older like you I'm thinking I'm getting one in my retirement years.
