Old British Classics to pass away the time....

Heavens Above - Peter Sellers as the wrong placed Vicar

I 'm All Right Jack - Innocent Ian Carmichael stuck between bolsy workers and manipulative management - both as lazy as hell - parody of British Industrial relations of the 1950s and 60s or was it reality?

I agree with Battle of Britain and Passage to Pimlico as great classics.

Cruel Sea was based on a corvette class ship built at Smiths Dock - South Bank (my great aunt was a supervisor welder there)

The Dam Busters. Amazing story, but nowadays would be classified as a war crime.

Tangentially, Richard Todd (played Guy Gibson) was in The Longest Day. Played his commanding officer. He was in the very first landing on D-Day, the gliders carting the paratroopers tasked with securing and holding Pegasus Bridge until relieved. A real war hero.

People of a certain age may remember Cy Grant - used to sing topical calypsos on the Tonight programme presented by Cliff Miclemore. He was shot down over Belgium and ended uo in Stalag Luft III. After the war he qualified as a barrister but couldn't find work of course nothing to do with the fact he was a West Indian.

I remember Cy Grant. Didn't know about his exploits. He must have been a contemporary of Lindy Delapenha in the RAF.
'The next Tonight will be tomorrow night' Cliff Mitchelmore, MacDonald Hastings (father of Max) and Fyfe Robertson.

One of the greatest of them all on bbc 2 now

reach for the sky.

Written by Paul Brickhill who also wrote The Great Escape. Kenneth More. Brilliant classic British actor. Loved him in The first ever Doctor Film with Dirk Bogarde Dr in The House.

Also on today The League Of Gentlemen. Classic heist plot which was an influence on Reservoir Dogs. What a cast list.
