Oh, for the ethos of Union Berlin.

Feel for Union Berlin. Held their own for most of the game then sat back and invited pressure only for Jude Bellingham to score in injury time.

i went to see the boro play Union Berlin under strachan - they mullered us - their stadium is in the woods - but to bring their ground up to scratch with steel and concrete their fans did the work and supplied the materials.

they have gone on to do remarkable things.
I went to that preseason friendly, it was a great day out. Scotty Mac got a brace if memory serves. It was a bit hairy walking past their fans pub at Kopenick station.

If anyone is interested, there is a very good book written by Kit Holden about 1. FC Union Berlin called ‘Scheisse we’re going up’ (no translation required).
It’s an interesting read, covering the history of the club, and in particular their colourful fan base.

Hoping to get tickets for stuttgart when I visit my daughter. Love the german league set up.
Any one willing to own up to this number plate I saw on out previous visit?

How does Union Berlin fans own the club but do so well in the Bundesliga? Who makes decisions? Where does the money come from?

It’s the 50 + 1 rule for the majority of German clubs. The fans have a say in how their respective clubs are managed. From what I hear, it works fairly well.

It’s funny that number plate. It has the Boro crest, but having Oz in the number plate, I’d say it is either yours! a closet Geordie who likes Crocodile shoes or an ex-pat Aussie who loves the Boro 😻

Could Boro fans move to own the club?

a boro fan already does.

i remember getting a bus to Southampton, first game of the season 1978 - cenotaph at midnight - Yann Haith organised it, his dad had the vets on the curve of the avenue, just off linthorpe village

anyway, when we got on at the cenotaph it was the last stop for pick-ups and boarding - we went for breakfast at Southsea (portsmouth) - steve gibson was on that bus - a fan(atic) - a young lad who followed the boro with his time and at that time with a meagre amount of disposable cash.

so when you dream about the german leagues and fan ownership - remember we have been at it for the past 30 odd years as well.

Good read via the Athletic..

This is Oliver, he’s a fan of Union’. (Mackem it turns out)

“I’m always jumping in and saying, ‘No, I’m not a fan, I’m Unioner.’

“We are active, or I’m active. Even though I’m like a very tiny part (of the club), it’s like part of my being.”

If that sounds deep, that’s because it is deep at Union. It’s their club with their rules: never boo, never scapegoat, never leave early, and sing until your voice is hoarse.

From the athletic.. £1 a month for 12 months.. fyi
