O'Brien/Greenwood/Thomas not staying says Gazette

No great surprise. Wouldn't have minded obrien or Greenwood staying but not bothered that they are being released either.

I'm pleased we're not looking to sign Thomas or Greenwood. Neither of them showed enough to convince me that they'd be worth signing on permanent deals.

I'm 50/50 on O'Brien. He's a good player at this level and I felt he was showing signs that he could rediscover his Huddersfield form, after taking a bit of time to get up to speed following his injury.

I can understand though that his wages would have been an issue, and if Hackney ends up staying and we sign O'Brien, then we'll probably end up with a player on high wages sitting on the bench, just as we will if we bring back Archer.

I feel a bit sorry for him really, as I felt he was really putting the graft in to try and win Carrick over.

Agree, quite like O’Brien but he obviously didn’t do quite enough for Mr C.
With Jonny and Hayden the main men in there with barlassor and possibly Law Mac breaking through - and, I think they will be going for another, from somewhere or he could already be lined up.

Now, when you think about it, he didn’t play O’Brien at Cardiff or the last game it makes sense that he had already made his mind up 🤷‍♂️

Maybe he is too expensive or wages are for him.

I think we would have taken O'Brien had it not been for the costs involved, but that may change as we approach the end of the window, if he hasn't found a club by then.

None did enough for me outside the odd flash of magic. Said it on the Greenwood thread that he went missing in a lot of games and same can be said of the other two as well…

They offer nothing more than what we currently have in numbers so pointless wasting money on them to sit on the bench

O'Brien be a good squad player I think but it depends on the financials. Hopefully the club has better ideas around strengthening the squad and that's why we are passing, maybe he isn't happy to be a squad player.

I liked O'Brien but he is too expensive for us to be back up in one of our two midfield slots.

Agreed.
Would O'Brien be in our first choice midfield? Not for me. While all squads need some depth, I would not be spending big money on a back up.

We all love Howson, but we all now he's not the future either. I do think we need to invest in someone who can challenge him for his starting spot now and will also improve.

I wouldn't fritter our budget away by bringing O'Brien too

O’Brien didn’t stand out to me like I thought he would’ve, but I would’ve been happy to give him another chance next season. Hopefully the manager has another option lined up and also an alternative for barlaser . Surely there’s a boateng type out there somewhere

Think if we want to kick on we don’t need to be buying back up. We need people to drop in to the first team and replace somebody who then becomes the back up.

I do think we will also still try to bring in a few projects to develop, so all about getting a good mix this time around

Apart from maybe O’Brien, the rest of the loaners were in effect make weights with only Ayling really showing up. Greenwood was supposedly in to the job of maybe McGree, Thomas was a sub for both Bangura and Engle but they both were average at best.

Disappointed about O'Brien tbh, he was Huddersfield captain at a very young age and was their driving force in the year they got beat in the play off final...
Opportunity missed IMO 😕
