O’Brien

Looking at his season so far, I don't think he can replace Howson. Although Howson isn't a traditional defensive midfielder, he is the one who has to be more defensively alert. Playing with 3 at the back and Howson has allowed O'Brien to get forward. Oddly, I think he may be a decent replacement for McGree if he goes. Could replace Hackney but hopefully that won't be necessary.
 
OBrien’s wages will be the issue, good player, I think around 3 million might secure him? But he might rather see out his contract with Forest? I wouldn't be against another loan for a season.

Just about to post this. We should be cute and say to Forest, due to the injury we're interested in another loan and a deal when it's finished (similar to Greenwoods) ....if all parties happy.

He's just starting to show glimpses of the form when was at Huddersfield.....and if we can get him back at that level, we will have a player 👍
 
He played well against QPR. If he can put in more of those kind of performances from now until the end of the season then I'd definitely be interested in bringing him back for another season on loan.

I feel we should only consider signing him though if Hackney leaves. I don't think Hackney and O'Brien can play together but they could both play alongside a DM, either Howson, or a new DM who we'll sign (hopefully).

I think the biggest priority this summer is a Rodri type midfielder, someone who can knit the team together, with and without the ball.

Howson is still the most important midfielder at the club, but his legs arent going to go on forever (unfortunately).

Agreed, we need a Boateng and we’ve got a Mustoe. Nothing wrong with a Mustoe, but it’s not what we need in this formation and style

I’d be looking to move Barlaser on. His stock at this level means we could get a small profit but it’s clear he isn’t able receive it under pressure and we need that as number one attribute in a Carrick midfield. Number two attribute is good without the ball and Barlaser isn’t. He has his strengths with time and space he can really pick a pass, but he’s not going to get that when we are inviting the press
 
LOB has had a lot of disruptions due to his injury, but he's quality when up to speed. We haven't seen the best of him yet. IIRC He was playing out of position before he was crocked?

Why like J.O.M he stole a living off us. Apart from few glimpses in a couple of games he was really poor.
