It still hangs in the balance in tonight`s semi-final play-off second leg.
Sheffield United gave themselves a good opportunity - scoring late in the game at Bramall Lane.
Forest may have the 2-1 advantage - but we all know that a one goal lead is never enough.
Trees should have won 4 or 5 - nil in the first leg, but tonights match is even more nerve-shattering if you are a Blade or a Forest fan.
Forest have predictably sold out - but not for the first time this season.
Under Steve Coopers management, he has turned around a team who were looking relegation candidates.
Its been astonishing the difference he has made.
There is no doubt about his coaching and man-to-man management skills.
The previous Manager was sacked back in September - after Boro put the final nail in his coffin - with a superb Sporar and Hernandes strike at the City Ground.
Cooper quickly identified the spine of his side and made a shrewd loan-signing in Djed Spence - who has proven that he has immense talent and its taken a Manager with talent to bring that out.
Forest academy graduate - Brennan "Arrow" Johnson has also come into his own. Hes a tricky customer, although only 20 and still has a lot to learn.
Johnson received the "Player of the Month" Award for April.
He`s making a name for himself with Trees fans - not only for his football, but for his new trade-mark after scoring - the jesture of firing an arrow [Robin Hood Style]!
As the crow flies - City to City, Nottingham and Sheffield are 32 miles apart.
The sun is shining, all the coppers are on over-time and the pubs are expecting swift trade.
Needless to say - there will be a few sore heads after tonight`s game.
Expectations are high in Nottingham that "The Reds" will seal their place in the final.
Its inevitable - Forest havent played in the Premiership since the 1998 / 99 season.
There is at least one generation, if not two - who have never watched them play in the Premier League.
Credit where it is due - its been a great season for them - made all the sweeter by Derby County`s relegation to the third tier of English football.
Steve Cooper - is keeping his feet firmly on the floor:
