Norway players show of support for Qatar migrant workers

In 1978, Dutch players refused to go to the WC, IIRC, in protest at the Argentine junta. I still can't remember who they were, but it might have cost all the Holland players winners' medals (seeing as they were finalists).
If all nations had pulled out, it might have helped end the regime to the benefit of many. It might even have avoided the Falklands war. It takes more than tee shirts though.

I admire their stance but FIFA will just fine them for making a political statement - which is shocking as they cannot be having a go like that, its just not on you know.

6500 deaths? who are the health and safety managers over there, the SS?

Heroes.

Hope they boycott the tournament and I wish we'd join them in it.
we wont, too much money goes to them for Arms sales etc. The FA will say there was no political pressure from the government but there will be. Its down to the players to make the stance The FA Wont

I think it would need action from multiple big football nations for a boycott to make it's mark.
Really it just shouldn't be there. The best outcome would be multiple boycott threats leading to a change of venue.
The problem with that is it means 6500+ deaths for literally nothing. I’m not saying it’s right that it should be there but I can’t see a scenario where it will be somewhere else.

I don't know what can be done about it since they are judge and jury on this, but did FIFA not make a political statement by awarding the WC to Qatar? It's a statement, loud and clear, that they're ok with Qatar's record on human rights.

As usual, I know that I'm whistling in the wind but I have decided to have absolutely nothing to do with the next World Cup. So, I have managed to avoid the draw a few months ago (I haven't a clue who are in England's group) and haven't looked at any results or headlines and turn off the TV/Radio if they are talking about matches etc. Even when it gets to the finals I won't be watching even if we get to the final itself.

I know that the whole World cup process has been corrupt for years (especially during Sepp Blatter's reign) but this Qater allocation was 10 times worse. However, if I make my own little protest it will make me feel better. Just in the same way that I will have nothing to do with MK Dons.

Admire your stance sprouts.

As usual footballers will protest but participate, fans will criticize but watch... thats life... virtue signal but draw the line when it "costs" me.

Good on you.

For all my talk of wanting England to boycott it, and I do want them to, I can't pretend that I won't watch the tournament.
So I'm probably a bit of a hypocrite.

The figure isn't from building sites is it? It's the number of people who have died since the world cup was awarded from the migrant population.
My mate just got back from 5 years in Qatar this week. Says deaths of migrant workers are daily and covered up. When Covid hit they just locked them all up together in their ‘camps’.

I agree, it's unlikely it'll change mainly because the big nations won't take any stance. If say England, France, Brazil, Germany and others pulled out then they could be backed into a corner.

I get what you're saying about the deaths, but I think their families will see it as a tragic waste of life already, I'd imagine they'd be in favour of Qatar being punished.
