Northern Ireland Protocol

John Caldwell was one of the top detectives in the PSNI.

The chances that he hadn't crossed paths with the gangsterism (drugs, guns etc.) that followed the ending of the troubles is slim to none.

He might have been shot to make a political point but he will have been targeted because of his work (as opposed to his job title).
Fair doos.

EDIT: I mean the explanation not the shooting.

Judging by the statement the IRA put out there may be further attempts to attack police officers in the near future.

There are plenty in NI that didn't want peace because it impacted the money they made.

Being a “remainer” I’m not a particular fan of Sunak or his attitude towards the EU but this looks like quite an achievement.

Surely even the maddest sections of the ERG/DUP must see they won’t do any better than this.

Hopefully he will call a general election soon and we can all express our opinion on the state of the union.

You could argue, that the tories have agreed a protocol that was part of the trade and cooperation agreement they agreed to in 2019, voted for and signed.

We should probably be feeling a little gaslighted here. The tories will spin it as a success... Hmmm..

Sunak crowing that NI now has access to the GB market and the EU Single Market. Which is what the entire UK had until Brexit. The Brexit he wanted and signed off on as part of the government. So he is essentially boasting about undoing what he wanted and put in place in the first place. Gaslighting all the way up to 11.

I think Sunak has been quite clever; the wording is such that it looks like the DUP have a veto when in reality they won't have one.

It's the same clause that Norway have with the EU as part of the EU/EEA agreement, except this time it would also require intevrention from Westminster.

They've clearly gone through this to a level of detail that no Johnson or Truss government would bother with. I think the ERG are a busted flush; a lot of them think they're losing their seats and have no great appetite in siding with any DUP outliers who might oppose this deal. The intra Island (of Ireland) issue is largely a symbolic one. We aren't checking most goods coming in through the border ports from the EU and have no immediate plans to do so.

Whilst on the topic of NI, I see the lovely Mr.Donaldson has agreed to repay the £555 of public money he spent on pay to view movies (allegedly gay porn). He's also agreeing to pay a further £678.90 on room service, mini bars and entertainment during his hotel stays.

People have pointed out the DUP’s objections are not touching on one of the main reasons
.that the idea of going back into government with a Sinn Féin leadership is incomprehensible.
Depending on the numbers available they poll only 20-23% of the vote. Yet believe they are somehow still in control. Hopefully this could break the back of the party and the more sensible elements will gain control.
Yet it seems threats of “Burning the place to the ground” are being muttered by those background voices already.

Fundamentally, this. Eulogising about something he campaigned on and removed from the rest of the UK. Talk about taking the p ss.

To add to Ziggy's post - many on the DUP not wanting to be in Government with Sein Fein................when Sein Fein are the largest party in that Government. These particular DUP members seems to be OK with no NI Government.

The difference from pre EU Refendum Vote days - with free movement of goods between the Single Market Zone and Great Britain, that is proposed in the Green Channel - is that then it was only granted because GB was in the EU. Now its likely to happen with GB outside of the EU.

I hope eventually the UK government and the EU agree to Single Market membership, both sides seem to be moving together a little more. I can understand that the EU as instituition felt badly snubbed in 2020, but what we are finding out is that the current arrangement doesn't help some EU businesses access the 67m population in the UK market on their doorstep that they were selling a lot to (example Dutch Flower growers) as well as vice versa.

Extraordinary….”Northern Ireland is in the unbelievably special position - unique position in the entire world - in having privileged access not just to the UK market… but also the EU single market'

'Nobody else has that. No one. Only you guys, only here’

Rishi Sunak hails his Brexit deal. Confirms the total Brexit screw up.
That’s as far as he can go…but it kicks the door down for Starmer to stroll through, If he could lose his fear. For the first time Starmer stated. “In our talks with the EU” Which is no surprise they have been talking. Perhaps during those talks it would have been laid out what would be available for a ‘trusted party’.

On the subject of flowers, I used to buy my wife a bunch every week from our local garage. They have doubled in price on the last year so I just tell her I love her instead
