Just checked the laws on the Lewis pen. Nothing seems to leap out to me. Arguably could be classed as "recklessly striking" but I'm pretty sure "strike" would normally mean with much greater force than he applied!

There was no reason for giving it at all.

I'm sure there will be an apology after the game for the poor decision.

If this was an important game though can you imagine how costly that decision could be, it's not on.

It's definitely just incompetence, because they'd have given a penalty against Maguire otherwise.

I would argue that the ref wants to be the star of the show and is making the game more about him.
