" No massive use for food banks"...... apparently

Sadly i think his views are shared by lots of voters. Not out of lacking compassion as such, although that applies to some, with the people i know it's more down to a total inability to see beyond their own comfortable lives and total lack of understanding of the world outside of their bubble.
My own mother says this is why people should have "savings". That's not her dismissing people's plight, it's her having absolutely no understanding of the living situation of others.

Maybe they should have their expenses limited to £75 per week (Job Seekers allowance)

Was their a Conservative MP who said he could not live on £83k a year or £1650 per week?
Our great leader himself, may all praise be upon him, said recently that he was struggling on £150,000 pa. Even getting other people to pay for his takeaways, holidays, wallpaper and other sundry furniture items hasn't seemed to balance his books.

I read about this on Twitter earlier. It got me to wondering how much a day I spend on food.
I track my food / calories on an app so I worked out what yesterdays intake (a fairly typical day) would have cost. I was quite surprised, it was a little higher than I had expected.

Early Breakfast
Toast & Jam 27p

Breakfast
3 eggs on toast & HP 61p

Lunch
Jacket Spud, tin of tuna with Mayo, Parmesan cheese. £1.65

Tea
Chicken curry from scratch with naan (slightly fancier chicken) £3.34

Snacks
Yoghurt, Blueberries Ryvita, Philadelphia
£1.47

Essentials!!
Budweiser Budvar £0.75

That comes in at £8.09 for the day for me alone. Or just under £57 a week pro rata and bags me roughly 2500 calories.

Granted the beer is not daily so could come out. The branded products and fresh parmesan could be switched too. Doing both might save a quid or so between them.

I’m lucky in that me and the Mrs both have half decent salaries so that amount isn’t us trying to get down to the minimum spend. However at the same time I don’t think that menu could be considered luxury or convenience eating.

If you multiplied it by say 3 for a couple with a 2 small kids, it’s starting to look a bit tight!!

I opened a thread on this topic at the same time as this one was made and my comment was, rather than publicly flog these inconsiderate bàstards, we should make them live on what millions of the population do.
I often wonder if there is some sort of competition between certain low ranking Tories who are happily taking their slice of other people's pie and have no ambition to govern. The competition being who can be the most out of touch and lacking in awareness. This waste of sperm and that Lego-headed doyle Fabricant seem to be going head to head currently.

It's not just about anyone's situation in a particular instant. It's often the shock to the system that a sudden change in circumstances can happen to most normal people.

However there is clearly one group of people who genuinely can't budget for themselves.

They're called The Current Government.

We're in the middle of a government inflicted cost of living crisis which means that many people who can cook quite adequately are unable to afford to do to so given the cost of gas and electricity, others have dietary requirements and intolerances but gluten free products, for example, come at a massive premium, the Government could launch schemes to provide better education on healthy eating and projects like community allotments which would have the dual benefit of teaching transferable employment skills in sectors that are suffering from a shortage of trained personnel but they have no appetite to do so, they'd rather kick someone who is down rather than offer them a hand up.

The use of food banks is deliberately manipulated by the government to stigmatise and disaffect a whole section of the community that are, in the main, there through policy rather than personal circumstance.

Love this retort with "plenty of tips online how to cook meals"........when it's been widely accepted that those suffering the worst can't afford to use gas/electric to actually heat the food. That's why food banks are asking for people not to donate potatoes.

Meal for 30p.......😳😳

Patronising b*stards.

How much did the energy to cook cost? That needs to be included.

Also. Two breakfasts? Do you live in The Shire?

Thank you for the analysis - my guess was around £6 per person per day, bit likes yours that without energy costs for cooking etc of say £2 per day.

I am sure any MP could live on £74.70 per week (excluding rent) :(

A daily meal for 30p is laughable, to get everything you need from your meals isnt possible anymore on a low income/universal credit regardless if you can cook from scratch or not

Same bloke who described his second job contract of £250,000 when writing for the Telegraph as 'chicken feed'.

It's classic Tory policy really, create suffering in society and then blame those on the receiving end, with the Daily Mail ususally re-enforcing it

You’re right, I didn’t include the energy cost of cooking / refrigerating / washing everything in the above workings. Maybe another £2?

As for double brekkie I start work quite early, exercise quite a lot and am generally bit of a greedy ******* 🤣

In amongst the carefully provoked argument and the outrage, the underlying Tory message is that those who are struggling with little money will just have to get used to it.

Expect more of the same.
