No cinema in Sunderland

I never get people stating they prefer the home experience to the cinema. Watching in a cinema is totally different experience and can improve the film. How many times have you watched an average film but enjoyed it more because it was in a cinema.

The Showcase at Stockton is brilliant with the recliner seats and offering much more personal space between other patrons. If I remember rightly, the prices are £7.50 on a Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and you can also become a member and gain points from different purchases (films, sweets, drinks, etc.) that can be used for further viewings.

Someone on here pointed out it was Cinema Day last year and since then the wife and I have attended regularly.

Regarding Sunderland, I thought one of the shipyards was being turned into a film studio, you would have thought a cinema would go hand in hand with that.

I struggle to stay awake for a movie in the cinema. I almost always fall asleep for at least a portion of the film much to the annoyance of Mrs B_G.
I do the same at home but at least I haven't paid £12 to fall asleep at home.

You would certainly fall asleep in the Showcase with the recliner seats.

We've not been to the cinema for well over 10 years. People are the issue, chatters, phone always out, munching on something, etc
But we went to Darlington Vue to watch Indiana Jones at 2pm mid week. It was superb, so will be doing at again when the schools are back as it was nice and quiet.

Off the top of my head;

*it doesn't cost me £7.50 on certain days or more on others - an 8pm showing tonight showcase is £11.50, so for two adults that'd £23 before snacks and transport. Looking at an 8pm Tuesday ticket it's the same price
* my sofa is more comfortable than any cinema seat I've ever sat in
* I get unlimited drinks and snacks and no travel time
* I've got a 77 inch Oled with optimal viewing distance so it's still a big screen
* my sound system is calibrated to my sofa for object orientated sound instead of needing to be optimised to the entire cinema seating plan.
* I can watch at any time, and if I don't like it I can turn it off and watch something else.
* I can set it as loud as I like
* I don't have to deal with the situation where a group of people decide to have a chat or kids want the entire film explaining to them off their parents
* don't have to listen to popcorn and sweet packets all way through
* if i want to watch trailers I'll have watched them already as they're released so don't need to sit through 30 mins of ads, trailers and internal cinema ads for gift cards or unlimited cards
* i know my seat is clean and hasn't been farted on all day by 10 other people
* watching a 2.5 hour movie takes 2.5 hours instead of being a much longer experience because of all the extra guff
* no one is ever in my pre booked seat

Am sure plenty more reasons. 10 years ago I would probably agree with you but hike TV's, sound systems and media quality have all come a long way.

Horses for courses tho; imagine if you're watching it on a 8 year old 42 inch plasma with a £80 soundbar the cinema is quite appealing 😂

If people can't enjoy movies at home, get a better setup. I go time to time but in general I prefer the home experience almost every time.

Should qualify that by saying i was an unlimited card holder from its launch in Teesside until lockdown and usually went once or twice a week. Been to several imax, which are great, and been to showcase plenty of times. But I'd still pick my setup over everything but imax.

About to go watch Elemental at Vue Gateshead. Screen virtually sold out. Popular film or crap weather?

Fairly safe bet!

I don't bother with Individual reviews but RottenTomatoes has two useful indicators which is critic and audience score, when they're both heavily positive it takes a big difference in taste to not appreciate it imo

Not for me.

Can understand why Cinema's could be struggling - prices are insane and the easy streaming available at home (legally and illegally) is too convenient.

However, watching a film at the cinema's is 100 times better than watching it at home.
I don't like it just because it's too loud. Not sure if this is to drown out other noise but at times I find it unpleasantly loud.
I don't watch many films even at home.

This is the same for me, people chatting, people checking their phones, sweet and crisp wrappers rustling, loud crunchers who chew like staffys etc

Some screens are too loud as well and set my tinnitus off really badly for a few days.

There's a huge cinema at Boldon just outside of Sunderland next to the biggest ASDA ive ever been in which even has a Greggs in the middle of it

Saw new mission impossible in 4dx @ Newcastle. For me it was well worth the extra price. Kind of like being on a rollorcoaster.

I haven’t been to the cinema in years. I do like the experience of the cinema but hate when it’s too busy and full of scrotes.

Years ago loads of us had Cineworld Cards and done Orange Wednesdays so we’d go as a big group as a card classed as a paying customer for the BOGOF for those without cards.

I’m going back 15 year ago now.

My mate works 4 day weeks and always goes to the early showings on a Monday where he tends to be the only one there - that’s more my thing these days.

Now we have the bairn. We will no doubt go back to the cinema as she gets older.

The cinema experience is generally excellent and I love a cinema trip, for some reason If there is a sad or poignant ending, I always end up teary, whereas at home never. I think you get more absorbed in the cinema experience.

It is only occasionally spoiled if you are sat close to people who are munching loudly on popcorn, or yakking away when they think they’re whispering and worst of all those forever checking their phones. I have been known to tell people to stfu or leave, I once got some applause too 🤣

Watching at home is nowt special, just another evening in watching the telly.

I have the same view of music, always more enjoyable whether in a pub, theatre, stadium etc, even if its someone you are normally indifferent toward, the experience is something out of the norm therefore affects the senses and brain differently to listening or watching in your home, in my experience anyway.

(btw, I know films are not live before someone wants to be smart 😁)

Boldon’s in South Tyneside mind. It’ll have an NE postcode. There’s one near Seaham that’ll have an SR one though.

Entertaining Disney formula. One and a half hours of NO you can't do that, followed by 15 minor Aw go on then..... cue happy ending.
My 6 year old grandaughter came out with a beaming smile after breaking her heart.
Did I need a hankie...? Nah I sneakily wiped my eyes with my sleeve before the lights came on.
