After a many years in the wilderness, York are finally on the up (potentially). New ownership, a bit of cash and now an FA Cup TV game against Wigan

Good times. I was there to see York beat Luton in the PO's at Wembley, not too may years ago. How fortunes change

Remember when they knocked Man Utd out the League Cup. United played a strong team too that included Parker, Irwin, Pallister, Sharpe, Beckham, Giggs and McClair and lost the 1st leg 3-0 at OT

The big guns came to Bootham Crescent with the likes of Cantona, Scholes and Cole starting but The Red Devils left themselves too much to do in the 2nd leg

No reason why York couldn't do a Luton, it's a decent sized city (220k) and they can't all be Leeds fans.
Feels like there are a lot of Leeds fans! At kids football on a Sunday there are Leeds kits, PSG, Barcelona, Man City, Newcastle tops under the main kit. And one solitary Boro kid (mine). I don't see York City kits.

Anyway, still early days for York City under the new owner. They continue to shoot themselves in the foot on the pitch, and while the new owner is likely to be an improvement on the last one, remains to be seen if they'll put their money where their mouth is.

Great FA Cup draw though.

I'm originally from North Yorkshire, much closer to York than Boro, but family are from Boro so that sealed my decision. Used to love going to watch York particularly in the cupw but they've always been a smaller team and now with an 8,000 capacity stadium I'd say League 1 is the realistic limit. At the playoff final (which I went to and was a great day) there were 27,000 Luton fans and 9,000 York (i.e. it didn't sell out despite the huge stadium capacity.)

The crowds they got in the sixth tier were impressive mind, and great to see them on the TV again.

Oh, and a bit of trivia for fun. Who are the only one of the Big 6 that York have never beaten?

I lived in York (New Earswick) for 20 years and it never felt like a football city. Even though the population is higher than Middlesbrough it has a lot of outsiders who moved there because it was a pretty cool place to live. It also had no heavy industry and the working class that would go with it, there are also a fair number of rugby league fans.

I'll go for Liverpool.....I know they've beaten Arsenal and Man Utd in Cups and imagine they beat Citeh in their third tier season. Imagine Spurs and Chelsea beaten during their dog days too....I know York had a great Cup run (Semi-Finals?) in the 50s.

I'd just started uni in York when that happened. The city was buzzing, or maybe that was just the 18y old me.

I'm glad to see them doing better; they did become my 2nd team and we went to see them a few times.

Not really a hotbed of football certainly; not sure if the move from bootham Cresent has affected this either way.

Shame Bootham Crescent had to go but a sign of the times. Im assuming the Council own the new stadium?

The RL team applied to join Super League not long ago (it must have gone back to Franchises)

Similar to Wakefield not far from Leeds but very little interest in Football. Wakefield have even lost their Super League status now

The club did get an investor a few years ago i seem to recall but it soon went pete tong. (EDIT John Batchelor sounds like a George Reynalds wanted to build York a 15k stadium)

Their 'local' derby is Scarborough and that's just as far away from York than what Hull is

It's amazing what you find on wikipedia they've got a 'firm' and their version of the Red Faction have disbanded

Like Scarborough, I've never considered York a local club. My only visit to Bootham was for a Hartlepool game, 0-0, with no visits to Scarborough. I've not been to the new ground but a colleague of my wife and her hubby are season ticket holders. We've already met up for a Northern League match so it's only fair that we do the same for a York match.

I’m from Northallerton and we always looked north, instead of south for most things.

Before they decided to put a load of chain stores in the place we went into Darlington, Stockton or Boro for a lot of things.

York is somewhere you went for a day out, but as I got older I went to the odd game at Bootham Crescent as i try and go see the odd midweek match.

Always enjoyed a trip to BC shame it's gone but hope they get back up to the top 4 leagues again soon. Was there when they beat Arsenal in the FA Cup mid 80s great day for the club

This is correct first time! They played Liverpool in the FA cup in successive seasons(85 and 86), both times getting a draw at home before being dismantled in the replay.
Man City beaten in the league, Chelsea and Arsenal in cup games and of course that crazy day vs United (I was 16, and my mate and I were gutted as we'd turned down the chance to go on a school night)
Then bizarrely, York have a 100% record against Spurs having played and beaten them once in the 50s.
I know all this having researched once for a football pub quiz!

Sadly not too much of the 'up' at the moment. 1 point off the relegation zone and Neal Ardley sacked.

Former Boro superstar Tony McMahon now in temporary charge.

And Berwick Kaler has been given the boot from panto. 13 years I've lived in York and nowhere near long enough to be in the clique for his idiosyncratic pantos.

He'll turn up at a smaller theatre I'm sure, working his way down the panto leagues.
