Next season - formation?

I am not sure about Coulson as a FB. I think Spence can grow into the FB role. A lot might depend if some serious bids were made for him. Djiksteel has looked ok since he came back, although where was he for their 2nd yesterday? I think we could even see a completely new back 4, especially if Fry were sold.

I think a new back four is nailed on now, maybe Fry can step up next season, but I think we could sign a better Champo centre half for a pretty low fee or even on a free.

I suspect we’ll be seeing 4-4-2 next season if NW is here, and there’s nothing wrong with that provided, as with everything, we have the correct type of players to play it successfully

He seemed to be saying post match he's a 4-3-3 man, which I've never seen us play it well to be honest.

I believe that Warnock prefers 433

If that's the case then we currently have

.........................Stojankovic
Dijksteel........Fry.........Wood.......Coulson
.........Saville......Howson......Tav
...Spence.......Britt.........Fletcher

as our first XI, I think we would need at least 4 first teamsers to have an outside chance of the play-offs, and another 6 squad players

It's extremely difficult to assess what formation we should be playing next season. Warnock himself has already said we need 2-3 players to create the spine of the team. That is the clearest indication yet that we are starting from scratch. I'd say we have 3 maybe 4 definite starters as things stand. Fry, Howson, Spence and one of Assombalonga/Fletcher.

Fry starts every game for me as long as we bring in a Wes Morgan type figure to play alongside him. I have Howson down as a midfielder. He hasn't materialised in to the Leadbitter goalscoring midfielder we were hoping for but he's the most comfortable footballer we have on the ball at the club and you need players like that in your midfield not in defence. Spence is a raw talent, but their's no doubting his talent. Amazing to think he was 4 weeks away from being released by the club (and he was going to be released). He's not good enough to be a right back as things stand and he's not refined enough to play as an attacking midfilder. So naturally his perfect position is as a right wing back. That's not to say he can't develop into a right back, but i get the impression Warnock likes proper solidity at the back. Assombalonga or Flecther. Britt if he stays and Fletcher if he goes.

You can probably throw Tav into the mix if he continues with the form he's shown of late.

I think we'd need two starting centre halves and two full backs to play a solid back four, and probably another three forwards for 4-3-3, and we're brilliant at signing forwards:p.

I'd go for the untested but potentially lethal 4-5-3 setup.. Ye it means playing no keeper and an extra man will have to sneak on and be vigilant to ensure the ref doesn't notice him but it just might work.

We probably won't have enough players for it!

Said last night he thought Dijksteel had been excellent for him and liked Spence in front of him as they cover for each other. Mogga said the same about the way he played Bennett and Andrew Taylor together.
Also said he likes to play 4-3-3.

Glad to see people are starting to come around to my way of thinking regarding Wing, great shot, poor footballer. It's taken 18 months but the consensus is now there, he'll be in league One/Two within a year, which is probably his level.

If NW stays, and 433 is the way to go, I would say Tav and Howson will be nailed on in midfield for this role, but he probably needs a third player who has a great shot and a deadball specialist. Important in any team, but especially a Warnock one.

We need better options on the wings, especially if Tav is in his proper midfield position.

We need FBs who can defend first and foremost, Dijksteel was showing promise just before his injury and has stepped on again since NW arrived, even Spence has been noticeably better defending in the last few weeks.

.........................Stojankovic
Dijksteel......xxxxxx.........Fry.......xxxxxxx
........xxxxx.....Howson.....Tavernier
..xxxxx.........Fletcher.....xxxxxx

Those are the 5 most pressing positions, but we need numbers and options at CF, LB, and CB, plus a backup wide player on the right. So maybe 5 starters, plus 4 squad players

Agreed and those squad players have to be good as well.. essentially better than people like wing.

I really wish he was the answer, he started so brightly at the club but it's just escaped him now.

Doesn't seem to have the engine or footballing brain to dominate a game.

Who knows though for so many of these lads it's about wanting it.. If he really put in the yards and got ready for next year he could become a better player.

He says we don't have the players for 433 at the moment, which is obviously true. But I'd be interested to know who out of the current squad he sees as fitting into that formation and where.

There's obviously different ways to play 433. Would he for example see Fletcher as the central striker or playing wide? Tav in central midfield or up top?

It's probably going to require a lot of players being brought in to be able to play it. It's not just a starting 11 but cover as well. Mind we need a lot of players either way.

I agree, it will depend on our (well Mr Gibsons) ambition as well. With 4-6 players of adequate quality we should have a decent season, but injuries or lack of form may derail us. I think realistically if we are moving into a 'having a go' season we will need about ten players in, obviously a mix of signings, frees and loans. I think Warnock is the ideal man to do this as he did at Cardiff. He'll also know fine well there are x number of players he's worked with or who his team have played against who will do the job he wants them to.

We just need to be careful to maintain a good mix in the squad so we don't end up with next four or five senior pros all out of contract at the same time again in few years, our squad management seems to be awful.

If I were trying to judge what Warnock thinks then I would guess he doesn't rate Coulson otherwise he would have selected him more often. He also know we need at least 2 keepers and I reckon he would go for his own strikers.

I may be wrong, but he did say that the spine of the side needs attention.

Warnock said in his interview last night that his preferred formation is usually 4 3 3. He just said we didn't have the players to play that way.

The very formation that woody wanted and binned after 2-3 games.

If it is warnock. Then he always has a big lad up top but usually a bit of pace rather than just a lump (I'd imagine he would love Hugill). Two big CBs who score goals and he's partial to pacy wingers. So sounds decent👍

His Cardiff promotion winning side scored 21 goals from setplays. So fully hope that improves (pulis failed).

I don't think Wing's a poor footballer at all (certainly not league 1 or 2 level) but he's not a player you want to build your team around if you're looking for a top 6 Championship spot. He's had a poor season but you could say that about many of our players. His passing and decision making has been way below what he's capable of and as a midfielder you can't allow that to happen or you'll be out the team.

On top form he's comfortable on the ball, makes the right decision on the ball, has high energy level and offers you a serious goal threat from outside the box. He's a solid Championship Midfielder on form but he needs to find his consistency.

if Warnock is able to sign the players he wants and we can afford I really hope his experience will help nail down positions for the younger lads. Is spence a right back, wing back, right wing, likewise Coulson. Can he bring the best out of Wing. I know versatility is seen as a bonus but it sort of goes against round pegs in round holes. Plus surely its best to get in the team on merit in your position, otherwise you are pretty much always the bridesmaid and I dont think you ever really fulfill whatever potential you have.

Squad after Wed...
GKs - Stoj, pears
RBs - Spence Dijksteel
CBs - Fry Wood Stubbs
LBs - Coulson, Bola
CMs - Howson, McNair, Saville, Wing
RWs -
CAMs - Tav
LWs - Browne
Str - Fletch, Britt

I would like to see Roberts back again and Gibbo returning. As well as Hoilett and Morrison from Cardiff (hoping for the Warnock link), Thomas from Barnsley, Lowe from Wigan and Powell from Stoke.

Stoj
Spence Morrison Gibbo Coulson
Howson Saville
Roberts Tav Lowe
Fletch

Pears
Dijksteel Fry Stubbs Bola
McNair Wing
Thomas Powell Lowe
Britt

With Wood, Walker, Liddle and Malley looking to break through.

Can see Britt, McNair, Fry and Spence all leaving though so they would need replacing if and when.
Is Stubbs still up in Scotland? I'd heard he was doing well - did that continue to be the case?

Is BoroMart our new head of recruitment?😀

Reckon you've gone stir crazy Alvez!

He was playing in Holland the second half of last season. Looking at his stats he did individually quite well but Den Haag got relegated.
