New look Labour

He should get a union jack umbrella like I've got. People with flags all over the place look like *****.

Of course we were patriotic in 1945. We'd just spent 5 years with most foreigners trying to kill us. Apart from the Americans who were too busy trying to shag our wives.

Anyway I though putting flags on stuff was vile xenophobic tribalism see Boris Johnson sticking UJs on vaccines.

There's nothing wrong with liking the country/symbols of the country you were born/live in. But it has to be genuine. Not saying that he doesn't genuinely have a sense of national pride, but this just feels so inauthentic and condescending. "Those northerners love flags and veterans, shove a few in the background whenever you're speaking and we'll get the votes back."

I suppose the problem is that left wing parties have a problem with this sort of stuff being leaked. I'm sure very similar conversations have been had with Conservative advisors, but they don't seem to end up in the newspapers.

'The post-war Attlee government, which is the most effective socialist government we’ve ever had, was incredibly patriotic.'

Indeed. The Beveridge Report, which was essentially the Labour Party's vision for the future of the UK for the working man was read by every serviceman from it's publication in late 1942 to the end of the War in 1945 and it was that as much as the defeat of the Nazi's that they were fighting for and it was that, rather than any snub to Churchill, that they voted for in the July 1945 general election.

You can hardly call out those voters as unpatriotic.
Although Labour eventually accepted Beveridge's proposals, he was a Liberal.

That's both right and wrong. Beveridge was indeed a Liberal, but he was probably the most socialist Liberal there's ever been (he was practically a Fabian).

Also, the Labour government rejected Beveridge's plan to create an insurance based health system, relying on local authority run hospitals. Instead they decided to nationalise the existing voluntary and LA hospitals, funded it from general taxation and created the NHS as we know it.
