Neil Warnock's damning assessment of Middlesbrough strikers: 'It shows what we need' [Gazette] + "Massive Mentality Issues" [Mail]

The contrast between Reading on saturday and Bristol last night is extreme.

The problems last night were:
1. Experienced players having absolute stinkers, with Howson and McNair the obvious pair - they were both utterly dire.
2. Our other better players played poorly - Dijksteel, Watmore and Kebano were off it. Only Morsy and Bola did reasonably and showed heart.
3. Our glaring weaknesses were exposed; we have no strikers and a desperately poor goalkeeper who breeds zero confidence.
4. The January new signings were always going to be fitness gambles.
5. The team always starts slow, on the back foot and establishes zero momentum before they are behind.

We are miles away from going up and will not make the top 6.
We are better off than last season.
We have some better and improved players versus last season and we have some very good players in Tav, Bola, Fry, Dijksteel and Watmore.
But there is a clear-out of the remaining detritus required in summer and quite simply better players with more heart brought in to replace them. (Assombolonga, Akpom, Fletcher, Saville)
The loan players will have to really show they want and deserve to be here if they are to come back, but Bettinelli should be chased already.
Agree with that
Though I still think we have a chance of the playoffs, we've challenged before, fell away, regrouped & came back, win on saturday & we're back in the mix (y)

The point is if we shouldn’t believe him on this then why should we believe him at other times.

I’m not naive enough to believe this but why say something like this which will bite you on the **** in the future. Similar things have been used against other managers truthfulness in the past so why should warnock be immune.

Akpom is up there with our poorest signings for decent money, he didn’t ever look like scoring last night despite us having 16 shots in the game. He never looks like scoring, very Lee Miller like in my eyes, totally out of his depth.

He also bigs up players in the team to say they're the best in the league, giving Brit the captains armband etc, I just think its his way of trying to bring out the best in his players

Thats a bit different to saying someone was top target when a blind man could see it wasn’t

May as well go nuclear on Assombolonga and take the arm band off him.
Has this really not already happened?
Publicly slagging off our 'strikers', deservedly by the way. It must baffle any sense of team dynamics to have your 'leader' cast adrift

Agree with that

I admire your faith mate, I really do and I appreciate ‘typical Boro‘ perform when you least expect it, but I think Cardiff will put us well and truly to the sword on Saturday. I can see another 0-3 or even worse, sorry but i think we will gradually drop away now. The fact we were in with a shout for so long is a positive though and a credit to Warnock and his coaching staff.

Overall I think we are probably just about an average side in the championship this season.

We have made some useful signings and some not so good, but that will always be the case whoever is in charge.

NW record suggests we have a good chance of promotion if he stays, I think this season given the circumstances is just so unusual to be a predictor of what might happen next.

NW is certainly not beyond criticism and or praise, I just hope if he stays we are in a position to be buy some better players, use better tactics and make better decisions and the season will be more of a traditional one and not disrupted by Covid.

I think it is worth writing this season off for promotion and preparing as best as possible now for next season.

Welcome back Corco65, I agree NW certainly isnt beyond criticism but IMHO, he's still the best option we have of going up

I will say this till its mathamatically impossible & appogies I dont mean, or intend, to come across as superfan, but I will see us making the playoffs
My dad once said to me, you never back the boro & never back against em either, we could all be shouting typical Boro on saturday, lets hope so

Easy to say with hindsight but I thought he should have freshened it up yesterday. I guess you don't change a team that's played as well as we did on Saturday, but clearly some of the players were running empty, Howson especially. He will have to change it on Saturday, and I expect Saville, Johnson, and maybe Spence will come in. I know it's the same for everyone, but the games seem relentless at the moment and it's difficult to turn form around quickly.

I did the prediction thing in the Gazette - I know it's like reading chicken entrails, but I had us down as finishing 9th, 71 points and that was with a win last night (!). By my reckoning though we've only had five wins (Swansea, Barnsley, Millwall, Bristol City away and Saturday against Reading) against teams in the top half, We're just not good enough against the teams around us.

But I do wonder why we ship in and concentrate on "wingers" when NW surely knows that is no good with the strikers we have. For me we need a 10 with the guile to put the strikers in rather than just chucking crosses in and hoping something happens.

I believe a lot of what Warnock says in the press is aimed more for his players to read, rather than anyone else. He is big on morale so things like Howson is best midfielder in championship, McNair is best defender plus his comments on Djksteel, Akpom, Bola and others is all about giving the mentioned players a boost.

It has obviously been a successful tactic in the past and we can only hope it works again now

“We can’t go with what we’ve got. We’re not strong or good enough”

finally someone at the club with the balls to admit what we’ve known for years.
Yeah that is Warnock finally losing his patience, almost a spitting his dummy out' after what I said about him being big on moraleo_O

Its never as clear cut and straight forward as we think it is.
Neil is an experienced Manager of 40+ years and doesnt bullschit. He has nothing to prove.
Players have much to prove - to themselves, if nothing else.

'Neil is an experienced Manager of 40+ years and doesnt bullschit bullschits all the time, even admits he does, as sometimes bigging a player up actually works. He has nothing to prove.'

Corrected that for you.

No.

Theres a big difference using a psychological approach to different players and man management.
Its very high-school adolescent to believe that there is only truth and lies in life.

For example: I assume you have experienced times in your life where you have felt good about yourself, when someone has given you praise or credit for an acheivement?

You will also know how it feels to be told you are a "failure" or not selected?
Do we learn from those scenario`s that the way we interact with others influences our own behaviours and outcomes?

If you work as part of a unit, do you tell the one struggling at the back that they arent good enough (?), or do you work as a team and provide the encouragement to all work harder and support that member?

Its about getting the best out of people.

If you think nurturing people [what you call "bigging" up] is equivalent to not telling the truth ["bullschitting"] - then you have a problem.

It takes essential personal insight and skill to identify an area where someone may do better, and an even shrewder mind to recognise how to get the best out of that individual. [Because we dont all respond identically to the same stimulus].

Im afraid crude generalisations dont even approximate to comprehending a far more complex process, which I am sure you would benefit from understanding.

You chose to believe who you like.
Managers are custodians.
Football is the "religion".
I dont give a monkeys if a three legged monster from "The Restaurant at The End of The Universe" gets us into the premiership!
I`de get an extra - long scarf to keep them warm!

It dosent matter what you or I say about Akpom, the point I was making & you disgreed with, that according to NW Akpom was his main target, probably his No1 target, as of now he's not measured up to NW's hopes is neither here nor there
