Morgan Rogers

I’ve been one of his biggest supporters but talk of him being an England international within 12 months is a bit much I think, simply due to the competition for places in the positions he plays.

Mate text me yesterday “why did you sell Rogers mid season?” Said we had to and we’re just unlucky. No doubt in my mind had we kept him we would be in the playoffs now.

Hope so.. you’d think CL qualification would be a fairly standard trigger in a contract

I don't honestly think it will be.

I'd expect the clauses to be on personal milestones such as appearances and goals.
Those probably seemed safer options to us than betting on Villa to qualify for the CL when we negotiated the transfer: they weren't in the top 4 when Rogers signed, and Villa hadn't finished in the top 4 since 1996.

Now Villa have finished in the top 4, it looks an obvious call, but it would be nice to be able to bet on races after they'd finished, wouldn't it?

If it was just up to us, there wouldn't have been any clauses.
It would all be up front.

Villa will 100% have had a say in what the clauses were.

The deal was agreed when Villa were 4th too.

Clauses are agreed, not imposed by one side.

We'd push for clauses we think are most likely to pay out, they'll push for clauses they think are less likely to pay out. If villa dictated the clauses, they surely choose winning the CL, not merely qualifying for it.

As for which exact day the deal was actually agreed on, I'd argue there was a lower than 50% chance of villa finishing in the top 4. Surely a far better chance of him making 50 appearances, for example.

It's a gamble from a club.

Qualify for the Champions League and you could make that money in 6 months, regardless of the performance of the player.

50 appearances would take at least a year, and is fully dependent on the club picking that player.

Villa might well have offered more if the clauses included Europe, as it's a clause that is only triggered when they're earning more money to begin with

With Villa's position in January, I would be gobsmacked if there wasn't a clause dependent on Villa qualifying for Europe, Champions League or otherwise.
