Monaco Grand Prix

Well that was about as dull as expected. Poor race with almost no action, no on-track overtakes & poor TV editing missing the only potential action all afternoon. Monaco looks pretty, but if they never went there agin I would not miss this race The Formula E race around there was 10 times more interestng.

Still, all the other races this year have been good, and Baku has produced some great races in its short life, so I am looking forward to that. And the drivers championship is looking interesting.

Feel sorry for Bottas, who gets a lot of criticism for being beaten by Hamilton, and here was a race where he was the better of the two only to have a wheel nut issue of all things!

You need to appreciate Monaco for what it is.
Yes overtaking is difficult there but not impossible if you've got the balls.
Nowhere else on the calendar with possibly the exception of Baku has such a high risk factor at every corner on every lap.

The problem is that there isn't this level of risk when people are lapping 7 seconds off pole setting pace on a short lap while they preserve their tyres.

That's a good point actually. Even Brundle mentioned it when Perez was setting quick laps for his overcuts. Saying Perez is the fastest, well the only one who wants to go fast.

Evidenced by the fact that Tsunoda had the fastest lap for a while. That is an issue with this track. What to do about that? Specialised tyres of Monaco only?

What to do about it? Scrap a traditional race altogether. F1 are already experimenting with sprint races, which suggests to me that they are open to change.

Turn Monaco into a totally different event. Maybe do 1 or 2 lap timed shootout and give points based on that. Or a series of 1 v 1 "match races" against the clock / knockout format a bit like the race of champions.

Overtaking is impossible - so something should change. They are not going to get rid of the event altogether, but they can change things. The alternative is a dire follow the leader procession.

There is scope to change the track layout definitely.

F1 cars are simply too big and too fast for Monaco now, any race excitement is exclusively via accidents or pit errors.

It needs a longer straight or some wider corners where overtakes can happen under breaking.

Lewis Hamilton maintains that the Monaco GP is no fun - even if you are leading.

I would have to go back 36 years to 1984 to find a great race. Senna in a Toleman, in the rain, carving his way from 13th on the grid to lead after 32 laps. Prost managed to get them to stop the race just after Senna passed him to lead. The race was then deemed to have ended on the previous lap so Senna and Toleman were robbed of a worthy win
.
Senna really announced his arrival into F1 that day.

If you have never seen that race then then look it up. Amazing, fearless, skill beyond belief and a class apart.

In the rain and 1984 being the key factors. Bad weather and smaller cars. With today's cars even bad weather might not make much odds.
