Missing Whatsapp messages

How is Boris and Rishi saying "I don't have the messages anymore" or that "the messages were accidentally deleted" a viable response in a very serious investigation in the handling of the covid pandemic? If they were investigating Joe Public, would that response be acceptable?

Of course it wouldn't but then normal rules dont apply to the likes of them. If anyone had done what Mone did and nicked a load of public money then you could be assured they'll move heaven & earth to bring them to task.

Look at how they go after benefit claimants who make mistakes...

I've heard someone say the law should be changed to say these excuses should come under existing laws of 'destroying evidence' - I'm sure these seemingly above the law ratty scum will find another way out even then, but sounds sensible

I’ve never lost a WhatsApp message, I don’t know anyone that has. Yet two blokes who live next door to each other lost a shedload for the same period. That’s an amazing coincidence.
Almost as amazing as saying the bloke who set the lockdown rules didn’t know what they were and found them too hard to follow. Bloody amazing.

I've used Whatsapp about three times ever.

Just opened it on my newish phone and the first thing it does is require me to set up backups on Google drive. Won't let me continue without setting up backups. Has it always been like this? Does it not store messages on its own server?

There will be a difference between a personal mobile and a corporate mobile and could be down to how the government/security services handle mobile devices issued to the officers of state. I would imagine there are strict procedures in place when someone switches from a normal MP role to Government and also to one of the great offices of state and i would imagine that there would be stricter removal and cleanup policies when a person switches between them. Rishi will have gone from chancellor of the Exchequer --> Normal Member of Parliament --> Prime Minister since COVID, I assume this will have meant mobile number changes and security level changes between each move.

Keeping the same number and leaving a history available for the prime minister every time it changes would make it easier for foreign spy services to follow them, and make it harder to identify the source of when an account is hacked (if it ever is).

Whats App messages are stored on WhatsApp's server, these 100% are recoverable. This whole thing stinks.

Edit I am wrong on this, they always on the phone not a server.

They were instructed to save all messages though, the whole thing still stinks.

I don’t have a backup options, I clear my chats twice a year. Can I recover them or not?

The scientific opinion seems to be yes but with difficulty.
I am sure the British SS could retrieve them if there was the will.

Me or you probably couldn't! (I am presuming you are not a high level coder apologies if you are)

In the case of Boris it is reported that a deliberate factory reset was done and messages deliberately purged so that could add difficulty to the task.

They did recover other messages in the Summer from another of his devices that were thought to have been "lost" (deleted) but they have been less willing to try retrieve these.

That could well be it. Either that or they’re just lying duplicitous b*stards.

Remember when they were trying to ban Blackberry Messenger as they couldn't recover messages from it for prosecution purposes?
Or when they wanted backdoors putting into encrypted messaging apps?
If it's as simple as accidentally deleting your messages then why the aforementioned security concerns?
Stinks to high heaven that senior government ministers are not covered by a law that should require them to use only certain apps and for all data to be archived as a matter of course.
