Middlesbrough's final 23-man squad registered with the EFL

No Stephen Walker, looks like he is on his way out.
Brad James still injured and not included.
Josh Wells quietly disappeared and no longer on the website.

Josh Wells looked decent, thought he featured in one of the friendlies? Whitby? Stephen Walker was highly regarded at one point.. dropped off or not done as well as expected out on loan?

I’d like to see Darnel Fisher back in the game. Cracking lad, was over the moon when we signed him. Pretty chuffed with Sammy Ameobi too.. and Martin Payero

Only speculating but maybe Wells didn't settle up here. Thought it was a bit odd he went back on loan to Lowestoft last season rather than go to a local team.
Walker seems to have fell off a cliff, he was starting games for us and doing well in L1 2-3 years ago, but now he will surely drop out of the league.

No Sivi either. I think one of the things Scott identified is that we don't have big numbers ready to support the first team from the youths. I guess we will buy lads like boyd-munce and the kid who used to be at Watford to try and bridge the gap.

Sivi is still included in the u21 list.

We actually have more contracted u21 players than senior players. They need more loan experience though, I'm surprised players like Dodds, Hackney, Gibson haven't gone out on loan (Dodds is 22 in Jan and hasn't played a senior game bar the Papa Johns) though I guess our squad depth hasn't helped.

It's funny that Darnell Fisher isn't classed as home-grown, despite being English, because he started in Celtic's academy.

We haven’t given proper opportunities to youths in years. Coulson got some games. There should always be a handful involved with the senior squad in terms of training, travelling, being the extra man and then stepping in whenever there’s a spot open due to injuries and suspensions. You give them a taste and hope they push on. The gap between youths and seniors feels too big IMO.

It doesn’t help when you have managers like Warnock who’d rather name 6 subs than put a youth team player on there. That’s just absolute nonsense.

We have 7 subs, you’d think there’d be a space for one or two kids to get their chance really. At least get some experience. I suppose it’s part of the promotion-at-all-costs mentality we have. Managers probably don’t have time to worry about youth teams, which is a shame really.

This summer everyone was up in arms because we only signed a dozen players, not 13 or 14. That sort of tells you a lot about where football is, in that nobody can really be bothered to afford young players the time and space to develop and establish themselves. Look at the stick Jones gets these days, for example.

I wonder how much we've paid Fisher and Ameobi in wages? In terms of minutes on the pitch.

Whilst I know injuries are part of the game. Its a shocking use of club finances (I'd also add Payero to that).
