Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Newcastle - "North East Big Three"

Do you think it's going to be a LOOONG time before we're all in the same league again?

Technically it could happen next year, but yeah

Unfortunately I agree it'll be a while, every game V Sunderland is the other team's cup final in League One so it makes it difficult for them to get out of that league.

Newcastle seem to be fast becoming the new Coventry, flirting with relegation but ultimately rooted in Premier League mid-table mediocrity.

As for Boro who knows what we're going to get, a promotion charge? a play off push that peters out? last day relegation avoidance drama?

It's a shame though as I'd sooner play games against those two than Southampton, Bournemouth, Reading, or other faceless southern based teams.

We are in the rebuilding process and belt tighten which should have happened 3years ago. I long for us to be a well run club like, say, Norwich.

There is an argument that all 3 clubs have been badly run. I don’t buy this in the case of Ashley. Yes, their fans hate him but they are one of the most stable clubs financially in the country.
I think you need a telescope to see us being back in the Prem. we simply arnt shrewd enough and without throwing loads of money at it - which we haven’t got?- we are devoid of ideas how to operate in a world of football our ownership can’t seem to keep up with

We're much closer to Newcastle and Sunderland than most Yorkshire teams

I don't personally see any Yorkshire teams as our rivals... even Leeds
That's like saying all the cities in the United States for example on the border with Canada should be focused on Canada.
Only closer because the media portrayed it that way such as the formation of Tyne-tees etc

Middlesbrough to Sunderland is 30 Miles
Middlesbrough to Newcastle is 40 Miles

Middlesbrough to Leeds is 66 Miles
Middlesbrough to Sheffield is 98 Miles

We're very much a North East club

No it’s not. This obsession of wanting to be accepted as a Yorkshire team with Yorkshire rivals is not for me. Teesside works best for me, and we are very much a NE team.

Obsession? Interesting choice of words . One could quite easily say the same in reverse.
It's not an obsession , just a reality.

I've worked in Leeds for a few yeras now and All LUFC fans I know will acknowledge that there is a bit of elevated rivalry with us but are totally puzzled when I tell them that Middlesbrough is in Yorkshire.

This yorkshire nonsense should have been put to bed years ago. We are Teesside in the North East. Up to half of our fan base is from north of the river so not in yorkshire.

Witness the red and white scarves out of car windows heading for the Newport Bridge on a match day.

There is a generation of Boro fans who understandably think of Yorkshire. After all, plenty on here have mentioned the North Riding part of their birth certificate.

Also, when I worked for PD Ports there was a great map at head office. I can't remember the exact date but it portrayed the Tees being the boundary. North Tees was Country Durham and South the North Riding of Yorkshire.

I would imagine though that any Teesside person under 40 doesn't recognize Yorkshire or have any affinity with Yorkshire. For me personally the Teesside area is North East.

I've even heard hull city on radio described as the northeast of england. Hull are like us in that we are both perceived as cast offs from yorkshire, with them being humberside. Historically I feel boro is more yorkshire than hull. Yorkshire cricket played here so cant pretend it's not yprkshire
