Middlesbrough still in the market for five more signings, including two strikers after Hoppe deal

Chris Wilder has confirmed he still wants to sign five more players before the summer transfer window closes, including two more strikers.

Boro sealed their seventh capture of the summer on Wednesday when Matthew Hoppe joined from RCD Mallorca. The 21-year-old USA international joins the club looking to get his career back on track after a disappointing spell in Spain, having started his career to much fanfare with Schalke in Germany.

Boro were already in the market for two midfielders and a left-footed centre-back too, but Hoppe was expected to be one of two centre-forwards left to arrive, with Marcus Forss joining the club earlier in the summer too. However, revealing after the defeat to Barnsley that he views Hoppe, like Forss, as a development striker, he affirmed that he still wants to sign two more strikers.

Wilder said: “He (Hoppe) wanted the number nine shirt, which I quite liked, but he’s not got it because we’re still going to get a number nine, and we’ll get a number ten in too. We’ll get a number four, a number five and a number 11 in too because they’re the five numbers that we’ve kept spare.

"I think that tells a story – and that’s the message from myself and the football club. We know that with these numbers we’ve kept open, we’re still trying to sign more senior players because we know we need those players. We’re willing to pay prices that are fair and competitive, but we’re not going to over-pay.

"We're excited about Matt as a player that we can work with. If he comes in and picks it up straight away, well that's brilliant. We'll be delighted with that."

The transfer window is open until the end of August and Boro continue to work hard to get numbers in as quickly as possible, with Wilder clear on his frustrations that the season has started before the window as shut. As is the case every year, he is expecting a mad rush from many at the end of the window.

Boro will be part of that as well, as the Boro boss didn't sound overly optimistic of any more new arrivals before the Sheffield United game on Sunday.

"As I've always said, the work that goes into this is detailed, exhausting, tough and we have to show patience," he said when asked about the prospects of new signings in time for the clash with his former side. "There is no way of getting around it.

"We're willing to pay prices that are fair and competitive, but we aren't going to overpay. I had a meeting with Steve (Gibson) yesterday, and I know where his head is at. We’re all on the same page in terms of what we’re all after, but it’s not as easy as people think it is and we’ll just keep working away. I’m incredibly confident that before the window shuts, we’ll get to where we want to get.”

I guess it depends on if our idea of fair and competitive matches other clubs valuations of their assets and the likelihood they can get replacements in - they will have the same arguments we've had about tav and spence no doubt

It also means we’re still five first team players short - five players who Wilder sees as the ones he needs NOW. So the team as it stands is nothing like what he wants to be starting a football match with. We’re going to be well into the season before we get everyone we need in place ( if it happens ) by which time we could be well adrift of the top places

That's the biggest statement of intent that I've probably ever read form a Boro manager, in the last decade anyway, I like it! (y)

It's also a message that if he doesn't get what we need, then I don't think he'll be sticking around, which is also fair enough.

Bit awkward for the lads playing in positions 4,5,9,10 and11 mind, but it is what it is.

Out of interest, how do these numbers work out with our current formation/ squad, who currently has those positions, and the other numbered positions? Some might be wearing the wrong number, for where Wilder associates that number with etc?

Good point. Presumably we are going to sign an '8', which Tav played, although he wore the 7 shirt.

I think that might end up the number 10, unless 9 and 10 are two more strikers which we don't have yet. Unless he's just picked some other numbers out of thin air, and just means we're still short of 5 starters?

I just don't get how the positions work out in a 3-5-2?

So, 4,5,9,10 and 11 are missing?

1 Keeper - Steffen, guaranteed starter
2 LWB - Giles, guaranteed starter
3 RWB - Jones, guaranteed starter
4 LCB - ? Bola's not good enough, and McNair not wanted in this role
5 RCB - ? I thought Dijksteele was good enough
6 CB - Fry has this number, but I assume that position is Lenihan's
7 LM - McGree
8 CDM - Howson, guaranteed starter
9 CF - ? Hoppe backup
10 CF - ? Forss backup
11 RM - ? I thought Crooks was good enough

Hard to figure this out without knowing Wilders positions for each of these, hopefully someone asks him at the next interview. Maybe he already thinks he has some people for these roles and wants to switch numbers around.

I think you're taking the numbers a bit too literally in terms of position.

I'd agree we know no.4 is the left centre back he's after.
2 forwards
centre mid to compete with Howson, and probably a left mid to replace Tav.

Got to be a better interview question than "it's an opportunity to get a win isn't it?" 😂

Do we realistically think we will get all these players in before the window closes? I personally wouldn’t be confident. Think Wilder is playing a bit of a game with the recruitment team. Be interesting to see how this all pans out. After an excellent start to his time at Boro, things are slowly unraveling.

Yeah, I agree, realised that after I listed the positions out, I don't see how the numbers work in a 3-5-2 anyway.

I don't think we need another 2 forwards, but we definitely need a key forward. If we are getting two key forwards then even better.

I'm not that fussed on LCB, we can work around that quite easily.

A CM is a priority, ideally one who can play left or right. We need a CDM too, as we know Howson won't have long left, if we can get someone even better, then great.

You have to remember teams want new players in, and to do this have to move players out. Domino effect starts - on steroids.
It may we be late August we can't get permanent deals done, so loan with fee agreed for next summer may be the road we have to go down.
If we don't get the 5 players in we will struggle like last season, and massive questions will be asked of the recruitment team.
Over to them to get their finger out and deliver.

With wilderball I'd say -

4 is a defensive midfielder (howson)
5 LCB
9 striker - big lad
10 striker - links play a bit more
11 LCM (Tav)

Really difficult to know isn't it with the forwards as Hoppe is a bit unknown, and although Forss has a lot more experience it's not clear what to expect.
Perhaps with the no.10 he means more of a genuine no.10 to give another option, rather than a striker.
