What are the benefits of a free port? Apparently it unlocks tens of thousands of jobs but tens of thousands of jobs weren’t lost when we ended our previous free ports (and if so great why did we end them?) and stuff online suggests it just shuffles jobs around from inland( so what is the expected gain? The talk was it was always going to be Darlington. I don't think Middlesbrough was really in the running. They have bigger plans for Middlesbrough ie a free port. Great for Darlo and for the surrounding area
EU free ports aren't really free ports. They are highly regulated and only a free port in name. The free port system we plan to implement is based upon the best free port models globally, so you shouldn't compare the new model to the previous one. What are the benefits of a free port? Interesting, could you sketch out the differences for us?The free port system we plan to implement is based upon the best free port models globally, so you shouldn't compare the new model to the previous one.
Sure no problem. I'll type it though as my sketching isn't up to standard.Interesting, could you sketch out the differences for us?
the darlington to middlesbrough train takes 27 mins, though i take your point if you include potential waiting timeThe transport links were always the let down for the Boro bid. Think about it... you can London to darlo in 2:20 on the fast train. Darlo to Boro takes an additional hour on something that resembles a bus on rails...is freezing cold or red hot and usually full of the dregs of society
Darlo also has an department for Education office that also promotes the positives
Freeport advantages for business are ‘almost non-existent’Sure no problem. I'll type it though as my sketching isn't up to standard.
One of the main differences with the EU model is tariff inversion becomes difficult for businesses to get around. Tariffs on the components are often higher than tariffs on completed goods. Businesses can send components to a free port to be turned into goods and the imported back to the rest of the country at a much lower tariff.
See the Singapore model for what we are planning to do. EU free ports are free ports in name only. They're way too regulated to be considered a free port in the universally accepted sense
