Middlesbrough not on final short list for treasury relocation

they would have come if there was a snow centre and a monorail. Typical short sightedness form Middlesbrough Council.

Darlington was always the main one they were pushing.

It's right on our doorstep and we share the Tees Valley now.

It's good news if it goes there.

yeh there wasn't a cat in hells chance middlesbrough was ever getting it, if it went to darlington it would be a great result though. Its a easy commute from middlesbrough so the opportunities should be open to those who wanted to apply.

Its obviously going to Leeds though, so it doesn't really matter.

The transport links were always the let down for the Boro bid. Think about it... you can London to darlo in 2:20 on the fast train. Darlo to Boro takes an additional hour on something that resembles a bus on rails...is freezing cold or red hot and usually full of the dregs of society

Darlo also has an department for Education office that also promotes the positives

It'd be great if Darlo gets it. I think the train DL to KX is a better service than Leeds to KX if that's a deciding factor?

Darlo is a doable commute for most of Teesside so it is a plus for the area if we get it. Leeds does have a Waitrose though...

Why would a Tory government send a major department to a constituency that has only ever voted Labour.

It was never going to happen.

The talk was it was always going to be Darlington. I don't think Middlesbrough was really in the running. They have bigger plans for Middlesbrough ie a free port. Great for Darlo and for the surrounding area

What are the benefits of a free port? Apparently it unlocks tens of thousands of jobs but tens of thousands of jobs weren’t lost when we ended our previous free ports (and if so great why did we end them?) and stuff online suggests it just shuffles jobs around from inland( so what is the expected gain?

I predict be it Darlo or Leeds or wherever that it just won‘t happen.

Remember when they tried to move the nhs to Leeds and none of them would relocate because Leeds wasn’t posh enough for them?

And in fairness, who would want to relocate the family a couple of hundred miles on a government whim?

EU free ports aren't really free ports. They are highly regulated and only a free port in name. The free port system we plan to implement is based upon the best free port models globally, so you shouldn't compare the new model to the previous one.

It will be a massive help to manufacturing and could lead to lots of new manufacturing jobs in the region, as components will be cheaper. I think it was behind Nissan's decision to manufacture their electric batteries in Sunderland, as it would fall under Teesport's designated free port area.

It will also create a lot of jobs in the area and also lots of other businesses and jobs based around the free port, such as hotels, pubs, cafes, newsagents etc. Plus all those randy sailors will be a boost for the local prostitution industry ;)

Channel 4 were going to move to Leeds I don't know if they did, but only around 3% of the staff would move.

I think its good move to get more public sector jobs away from prosperous areas, but the senior staff are nearly always against it and they have an enormous sway in the public sector. If you asked them to move to Luton they would say its hours away from London and London has everything they want - theatres, galleries, museums, parks, restaurants, sporting locations, private schools, airports, universities, best hospitals.

Interesting, could you sketch out the differences for us?
Sure no problem. I'll type it though as my sketching isn't up to standard.

One of the main differences with the EU model is tariff inversion becomes difficult for businesses to get around. Tariffs on the components are often higher than tariffs on completed goods. Businesses can send components to a free port to be turned into goods and the imported back to the rest of the country at a much lower tariff.

See the Singapore model for what we are planning to do. EU free ports are free ports in name only. They're way too regulated to be considered a free port in the universally accepted sense

the darlington to middlesbrough train takes 27 mins, though i take your point if you include potential waiting time

Freeport advantages for business are ‘almost non-existent’
