Michael Carrick not sold on Josh Coburn

Unpopular opinion. I don't think Josh has what it takes to be a top championship striker and I think this will be his last year at the club before moving to a league 1 or another championship team. šŸ˜•

Coburn is a brilliant young prospect. Let’s face it, you have to be to force an old bloke like Warnock to promote you into the senior ranks. Warnock is a manager with absolutely no track record of developing youth but he pushed Coburn through. That tells you quite a lot.

He needs to stay fit for a year. He’s the best finisher at the club. He’s a grafter, a presence, a lad who always seems to find himself in the right position.
You think Coburn is a better finisher than Forss?

I don’t get some of the negativity towards Coburn from some on here.

He’s a decent target man who can hold up the ball and bring others into the game, he’s also a decent finisher. Hopefully his injuries from last season are behind him. He’s a different type of player to Lath, so offers an alternative.

Would also like to see how Finch develops this season and Matthews should he stay. Worth a punt on someone else who can provide back up to Lath, but not worth blowing the budget.

When we go up next summer we’ll be looking for completely different types of players and shopping in a better market.
Not sure there is negativity. He needs to get fit and develop his game. Given his stop start career so far I don't doubt he will be better than he has shown to date.

I really can't understand how some people are writing him off, given his tender years and potentially high ceiling.

He's got some obvious raw talent to him and he's more than a "target man", which I think is a lazy label, due to his height and being strong on the air.

He's quick and can run in behind for sure, as well as coming short - I'd liken his game to Patrick Bamford, with some subtle differences, obviously.

He wasn't able to get on the pitch fully fit last season and I think some have either forgotten that, or simply not recognising how much it effected his game.

If the lad keeps developing we'll have a very good forward on our hands.

You always know there’s a potentially top talent there when you see some skinny kid you’ve never heard off come off the bench. They’re there on talent because in Coburn’s case, when he came through under Warnock he was nowhere near ready for men’s football. 17 year olds don’t come through if they’re not ridiculously talented. At that age talent is all they have.

That said, I remember he harried opposition defenders within minutes and won a throw in, which led to a corner, which was crossed in and he headed home.

He’s a really good player. I think he’s one of the most exciting talents we’ve had in years.

We've had far far worse strikers over the years that's for sure. Some of them we've spent millions of pounds on.

I don't think we can really judge him yet. He's shown enough in flashes to suggest he's capable of at the least, being a very good player at this level. Playing injured didn't help him second half of last year.

I'd be surprised if Carrick is confiding his personal thoughts on players to Graham Bailey šŸ¤”

He’s an excellent option to have at the club. I can remember ( and it’s only one game) but he absolutely shook up both Southampton centre backs.

He certainly can do it at this level and I certainly hope we keep him.

I do believe that Michael Carrick rates Josh Coburm very highly indeed. One thing he said many times last season was that he did not want to damage what could be a long and successful career by playing him when injured.
If Carrick sees Coburn as a really hot prospect then maybe we should respect hs opinion.

We don't need every player to be a sprinter.

While I accept having some pace in a team is important, if pace is all we have to offer we'll be in the bottom half
Where did I say that? I was giving my take on him, I don't think he's good enough but hopefully proves me wrong.

For us, Josh is a Plan B striker. Everyone needs a plan B, but I cant see him being a regular starter unless LL is unavailable.. even then, if Forss is available (where is he btw... not seen him on any rockliffe vids) i could see him favouring him with Josh as the backup option

Worth saying that if we played a little more direct he'd maybe be further up the pecking order. He's a good player, but not sure style wise he's going to oust anyone
Im not sure people on here know what kind of striker he is. He's quick and the majority of his goals are him getting behind defences. I think people think because he's tall he's just a hold up player. Also when Coburn and Lath weren't fit he still didn't play Forss up top.

I remember Coburn running Southampton ragged in a game early last season. . Only one game , but I think the kid definitely has potential - if he can stay fit .

Carrick started last season with Lath up front and bringing Coburn on. Within about 5 games he had reversed that. I think he believes strongly in both of them and will want them both in his squad next season. He will maybe add one CF to cover for injuries / increase competition

For some reason I always remember Mogga describing Curtis Main as being "asset rich". I'd say same applies to Coburn but more so.

If it clicks he could be exceptional.

I didn’t read the article initially, but now I have, I spotted it’s the Boro News site. It is a complete waste of time reading.

It kept popping up on my news feeds. It was just clickbait rubbish. Often regurgitated articles from elsewhere and any opinion pieces were often pretty clueless (In my opinion of course).

If they’re describing Graeme Bailey as a ā€œTransfer Expertā€ it probably explains a lot.

He played most of last season carrying injuries. I think if he is fully fit, then he is a good player to have in the squad.
