Michael Carrick not sold on Josh Coburn

For us, Josh is a Plan B striker. Everyone needs a plan B, but I cant see him being a regular starter unless LL is unavailable.. even then, if Forss is available (where is he btw... not seen him on any rockliffe vids) i could see him favouring him with Josh as the backup option

Worth saying that if we played a little more direct he'd maybe be further up the pecking order. He's a good player, but not sure style wise he's going to oust anyone

I don’t get some of the negativity towards Coburn from some on here.

He’s a decent target man who can hold up the ball and bring others into the game, he’s also a decent finisher. Hopefully his injuries from last season are behind him. He’s a different type of player to Lath, so offers an alternative.

Would also like to see how Finch develops this season and Matthews should he stay. Worth a punt on someone else who can provide back up to Lath, but not worth blowing the budget.

When we go up next summer we’ll be looking for completely different types of players and shopping in a better market.

Didn't dom shaw? Say last week or so that coburn and Gilbert were two that had impressed during early pre season? Def Gilbert but I thought Coburn was named as well. Might have mis remembered.

I would like to see coburn play up front with lath. He holds the ball up better than anyone at the club and uses it well. We've missed that since Chuba left. When he was brought into the team last year it ended our first run of bad form.
We did indeed have a fabulous run when Coburn led the line last season.
He’s an excellent option to have.

I think a lot of people are way too quick to write off a relatively young player. Let’s face it, he was never 100% fit last year.

When LL struggled initially he was a big part of our turn around in fortunes in September.

On the little I’ve seen of him, he looks like a decent finisher. Yes, he has rough edges to other parts of his game but he’s still got a lot of potential. He’s not going to be anywhere near the finished article.

If we intend on bringing in another forward player, the conundrum is do you loan him out or have him as your 3rd choice, but he also needs to be getting minutes under his belt to improve.

Josh had a terrible injury which he was playing through for several months last year and you could see it was effecting his movement.

Crook come out and said that Coburn was actually in the top 3 quickest at the club and I remeber thinking away to Watford that he seemed really sharp across the ground.

Our turnaround in form early last season had a lot to do with josh being our focal point, he isnt the finished article yet but hes 21 and still growing and learning, he is definiately worth keeping around the squad and at times playing in a pair with Lath when its called for.

On the opening post about carrick on coburn I would take it with a pinch of salt, whilst we need rumours to get threads going, most these days have nothong to back them up, Riley and Carrick dont see eye to eye and Riley wants out yet he has just signed a 4 year deal.

I remember him a few times coming off the bench and he’s defintley no carthorse. We’ve had a few of them over the years.

As he’s a bit big and gangly I think people naturally assume he’s slow. Yes, last season he looked slow at times but I’m not surprised with the injury he was carrying.

I’d like to see him just get the bit of nastiness about his game. He can give defenders a torrid time as he’s so big and strong.

That said, he was a little bit naughty in the Sunderland away game last year, leaving one in on Ballard at the end of the first. Love to see it!

Coburn is a brilliant young prospect. Let’s face it, you have to be to force an old bloke like Warnock to promote you into the senior ranks. Warnock is a manager with absolutely no track record of developing youth but he pushed Coburn through. That tells you quite a lot.

He needs to stay fit for a year. He’s the best finisher at the club. He’s a grafter, a presence, a lad who always seems to find himself in the right position.
