I’ve been having more of a think about Carrick’s future and the worry fans have of him being poached by a ‘bigger club’

Eddie Howe was 13 years in before he got the Newcastle job, Graham Potter much the same with the Chelsea job. I don’t believe a sinking West Ham is a step up from Middlesbrough at this moment in time. We’re 20 games in with a phenomenal potential.. but I do think there are certain milestones that need to be passed before Michael Carrick becomes a serious prospect for a top club. Steve McClaren won a league cup and had us in Europe twice, with us in the final at the 2nd attempt before the England job came along.

Looking at Bob Dennison’s reccord of 158 wins in 9 years.. why wouldn’t Carrick want to go for that. as silly as it may sound the first port of call would be a season in the premier league with Middlesbrough.. Chris Wilder finished 9th with Sheffield and the season after that got relegated. So I would say a season in the premier league and then a further season showing improvement..

Then we have the idea of silverware or qualifying for Europe.. just being boro manager doesn’t give you an open door to a top premier league job. There is a difference in being a top prospect and being a certified top successful manager.

Steve McClaren had 250 games n with us and 97 wins. Bryan Robson had 314 games in with us and 127 wins.

Eddie Howe had 356 games with Bournemouth and 143 wins in his last stint before Newcastle. Graham Potter had clocked up 190 wins in 435 games before the Chelsea job.

If he does reach a ceiling with us Newcastle might be able to blow us out of the water in terms of wages and resources.. them not winning anything means that he would be able to carve out his own path.. personally I think that Spurs might be the bigger pull if that time comes and of course there is the poisoned chalice of the Man Utd job.. even with resounding success it might not be seen as enough. A very tempting challenge as it may be.

Who knows. He’s here now and we’re enjoying it, the future looks bright. If Carrick wins a few cups here snd gets us back into Europe, even challenges for the premier league title.. would any fan hold him back if he wanted to take his chance with Spurs or Man Utd?

We might be barking up the wrong tree.. maybe spells in Seria A, La Liga or the Bundesliga will be his next stop. 10 years with boro and winning every trophy going.. who could blame him from maybe vincideribg another challenge.

People are nervous after the Wilder episode. We've had a reminder how things can go south when a manager's head is turned. Hopefully Carrick is already rich enough to not be swayed by PL wages.

I think he will only go if he feels he can't achieve what he wants with Boro. Hopefully we go up and that time is a little way off.

Record number of points in a season has gone, the best we can hope for is 93 points
(our record is 94)

I wonder what would have happened if we’d have let Wilder go?

Back in for Warnock to pick up the pieces? Play offs, promotion..

Burnley relegated and no where near the top of the table this season. Dwight Gayle and David McGoldrick leading the line.

80% win ratio over the last 15 games - won 12 lost 3

Keep that up and we win 8 of the last 10 - that puts us on 87 points, in 3 of the last 5 seasons that is more than the 3rd place team got
