Merson on Soccer Saturday

I remember when he was on that Harry's Hero's thing and he was talking about his addictions, it finally clicked to me why he wasn't happy at Boro. He was struggling and a recovering alcoholic around a club that had a massive drinking culture. It must have been hell inside his head to be honest.
I read only one part of his autobiography and it was his time with Boro. The club had him house sharing with Gazza! They use to take sleeping pills and drink red wine. It was madness putting those two together.

Merson was amazing for Boro in 97/98 and those of old enough have fond memories. I find him unbearable on Sky Sports though. He’s awful to watch.

Its just shows they are human. Mers, Gazza......no pretence. (y)

Imagine what he might have been like if he’d not been an addict. Despite all of his negative comments I still think it was a brave decision for him to come to the Riverside — not too sure if he made it while he was half cut mind you but to see him in a Boro shirt was quite unbelievable— especially as he was still a top notch player.

Not exactly brave. It was two things; money and Bryan Robson.

Astonishing the number of people of people who think "Merson got us up all on his own". It's a legend that seems to grow more as time passes.

Apart from being utter nonsense, it's very disrespectful to the likes of Mustoe, Festa, Pearson, Schwarzer, Townsend, Hignett, Brands etc. All quite clearly Prem standard players. I assume they were just phoning it in that season were they? Because I seem to remember them all being important players for us that year.

he was excellent that year, no argument here. But there isn't half some over exaggeration from some fans as to how good.

Juninho was better the year before. In a relegated team and at a higher level.

Exactly. I don’t think he really bad mouthed the club, but being around the staff and players we had at that time can’t have been good for him.

I heard him tell one story about him and Gazza, when they both lived together in Ravanelli’s old house in Hutton Rudby. They would both get on the drink and take a load of sleeping tablets. They’d each put some money on the table and who stayed awake the longest got to keep the money.

I know Gazza said that he would meet Merson at Stevenage station each day when they got the train up for training. This was when they both traveled from down south every day and they both had a couple of bottles of red wine on the train at about 7am.

I know it was 20 odd plus years ago, but it’s crazy. Merson was still head and shoulders above anything else in the Championship even with all the stuff he had going on.

He probably hasn't yet realised the Boro saved his career. It was a risky move to sign him.

Addicts tend to blame the rest of the universe for their misfortune rather than take any responsibility themselves. He is taking longer than some to get through his issues, but he’s gradually getting thit seem
Hope so but he had many demons. His son Sam who plays for St Albans has nothing to do with him sadly because of the way he treated the family. I hope Merson has found some life contentment and pleased to see he is coming to terms with how he was.
