Meeting/vote tonight regarding Middlesbrough Development Corporation

YES, but like 95% of the "people" we are mushrooms, fed on sh*t kept in dark, what was the vote abou
Preston and Houchen wanted a create a mayoral development corporation (MDC) which gave them 100% control of Middlesbrough councils assets in the Town center, no accountability and zero democracy as they were both named as board members, the people of Boro have no vote an no say on the board or what they decide to develop or even give away like Houchen already has with Teesworks

Fcuking hell. It's even worse than I thought. They are utterly corrupt.

Can they not just give the council the £18m without making the MDC?

In principle I agree with the idea… who wouldn’t want £18 million invested in central Middlesbrough?

All they needed to do was have an elected board.
With what level of scrutiny?

This is the problem with the likes of Preston, they think they can run a local authority like they ran a hedge fund. It just doesn't work like that, no matter how much they tell you that they know best. It's a fundamental flaw of the elected mayoral governance model.

All this money with strings is disgusting, obscene even.
You can have this money you desperately need but you must spend it on nice big shiny projects ie film studios in Hartlepool etc. Instead of where that money is desperately needed and could benefit the health of the whole community..
Am so relieved about this result. Middlesbrough has been moving further and further from the town many of us have worked so hard for.

Does the vote definitely kill the plans?

According to The Gazette:

“Councillors do not have the power to veto the scheme, but the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities could pull the plug due to the lack of support, meaning the outcome of the vote has thrown the plans, that have been months in the making, into a state of uncertainty.”

I must be missing something here? If it was through an elected body with fully traced and auditable accounts then what’s the issue?

Central Middlesbrough is in desperate need of regeneration and has been for years. The decline in the last three years has been staggering to say the least. You just have to look at the weekly posts on here about it practically being a no go area now to get the general vibe.

I can’t think of another part of Teesside that needs it more

Yes, you're missing something. It was about taking it away from the elected body. It wouldn't be fully traced and the accounts would be destroyed. We've been here before.

As if they’re going to take the £18m in a swag bag and sneek off into the night without a trace 🙈 Because of the Labour councillors not voting this through, as usual, nothing will progress in the town.

Assets will continue to stand empty, land will remain barren, investors will stay away from bringing their projects and money to the town due to the logistical minefield they have to go through and the red tape they currently have to cut through to get things done. Government will refrain from giving the backwards council this £18m investment because they know it’ll come to no use as they couldn’t organise a **** up in a brewery. Some of it is starting to come through, but the MDC would supercharge it all, make it all happen so much quicker.

They have voted against this because they know that if it were to happen, projects and investment would start to happen quickly (look what they’ve done at TeesWorks, the airport, Middlesbrough and Darlington train station, the redevelopment and investment from outside brands such as The Muddler, Stack etc in the Historic Quarter, the BoHo zone, Level X).. but none of it on their watch. They don’t care about our town moving forward, if it’s not them doing it (which they’re incapable of).

They’d vote down anything good that is to happen to Middlesbrough if someone else is making it happen and not them.

Political point scoring and bickering over progress. Shame, but it is what it is.

Off to West Brom anyway, UTB. Hopefully another win! (They’d vote against that happening if Preston or Houchen were to come off the bench and get the winner)

Sorry I think you misunderstood. I agreed above the current situation was dodgy as and rightly voted down. My response above was saying if it came back to the table as a fully elected and accountable organisation then what is the issue…

My response was to Rob who still said it was dodgy… it’s that I don’t understand

If the Tories are really that concerned about development in our town, then they would just give the elected representatives the cash so it can redevelop- and not create a quango board of chosen Tories to run it with zero accountability and scrutiny or democracy.
