Mechanic/garage for brakes

Thanks all, got it booked in. Kwikfit quoted £600 for the work so at least I know that is the worst case scenario.

I get what tripleheader is saying - that's actually what we did (and have done in the past) as they offer a free brake check so you can get told what is wrong with it and a cost to fix - she was wanting to just pay what kwikfit quoted but I wouldn't trust kwikfit or Halfords with the work as been overcharged by kwikfit before and Halfords I wouldn't trust with anything after they tried to give me the wrong bike many years ago and also after a service the wheel came off.

Got it booked in for the 2nd on one of Norman's reccomendations (y)

That's an extortionate price 😯
I think you've done the right thing Mr Perfume 👍

It's what the board is for
It is clear that some people on here cannot except the fact that other views have some credence. And the sooner N.C realises that the better man he will be for it.

There you go, at least you know what it is that has to be done and I asssume are safe to continue using the car. There is quite a large spread in price for brake components from maker to maker so I will assume N.C's recomended garge will see you right. I was warned off certain brands by Eagle Service Station, they get most of there parts by Europarts and suggested big difference in performance so just be wary, and don't be driven just on price.

Tripleheader - I would suggest that the pair of us got pigheaded on this thread regarding our point of view being right and not accepting others. Why you now need to carry it on by having cheap digs in your last post says more about you than me and once again you are trying to suggest you were right and I was wrong. Were either of our points of view wrong? I don't think so.

In the past, I and many other posters have offered other members advice and guidance on numerous subjects but feel that this could be my last. Your attitude leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I have got to question what benefits I get from dealing with people like yourself on this board. It certainly helps me understand why so many posters are leaving the board or choosing who they engage with.

No word of lie, I was incredulous.

When picking up the bike in the first place, they wheeled one out that was about £300 cheaper - was only because I was expecting a certain colour that I questioned it, told me to come back tomorrow and they'll have the right one built - how did no one check?

When the service thing happened I basically got half off the rrp of the bike but luckily it got stolen a few months later and my replacement bike hasn't been anywhere near Halfords in its lifetime.

They serve convenient purpose but wouldn't trust them with much

NC all I offered was suggestions,. I never dismissed what you said at all, I only argued my points no more than that. No right or wrong in my posts.
Who was It that suggested that 'Everything I posted was b***ks'. I could have flounced, responded in kind but that is not the way I conduct myself or how we should. The cheap dig as you call it was a reminder of that and how we should conduct ourselves in the future.
F.G has got his answers and you are right, lets move on, kick out any bad feelings and move on.
I'm sure if we were discussing this face to face there wouldn't have been any misunderstandings.
This board would be lesser for your contributions.

And the final bill is in. Kwikfit said about £600 for 2 new brake discs, shoes, handbrake cables and a fluid change as it had been leaking

Garage said most things were fine, fluid not leaking and cables have about 1-2 years life left in them. Cost for 2 brake shoes, a clean up and labour £144 plus highlighted a puncture which the guy opposite has sorted out.

Glad you got sorted and that is a huge difference to what KwikFit quoted you but their price included jobs that didn't need doing. One of the reasons why I suggested to avoid them.

Edit: When it comes to certain things on this board, some people know what they are talking about and others contradict themselves and spout bollox. People need to trust independent garages, the owners know if they do a good job at a decent rate people will return, where as a large chain will need to hit certain targets each month and are not bothered how that is achieved. You being quoted for work that didn't need doing backs that theory up.

I am sure there are examples of independent garages ripping people off.

After getting new front and rear discs and pads and a full service from a independent volovo specialist at not much short of a grand just before xmas the starter motor went yesterday and i think battery needs replacing as well on my v60. RAC managed to get it push started and i drove it back to my drive. Any recommendations for garages,, or could it be fixed on my drive.

Hi GE

What makes you think the starter motor has gone?

Did the RAC test the battery and that has made you think that it needs replacing?

Only reason I say is that if the battery is kaput then it won`t start the car no matter if the starter motor is good or has failed

They jumped the battery with a portable charger and van combined and all it did was an elctrical click when the ignition was turned.

1. Will the car start now since you drove it home?

2. Was it left standing over the holidays?
1. wont start now, also when i put it on the drive last night i tried restarting then and it was dead.

2. Not left standing but not driven much over the holidays, occasional low battery warning has been comming on and off recently

First of all, I would check to see if the terminals on your battery are loose and if not, I would change the battery.

Look at the battery and Google the make and size to see how much it is to buy a new one. It shouldn't be expensive and easy enough to change yourself. I feel that will sort your starter motor issues out. It doesn't take long for an old battery to drain and the cold weather sorts them all out.

This is what I would also recommend for you to do @Glover_elbow

As a note I used the following website for the purchase of my newest car battery about 3 weeks before Xmas and would certainly recommend them if you go down the route of purchasing and fitting yourself.
Came next day in the most secure packaging I have ever seen

I've also used the above website and bought my boat/leisure engine from these. If you are not sure of the size, just put in your reg and it should do it for you.

What happened to the days of hitting the solenoids with a lump of wood?

For a car bettery v starter motor problem. Put a multi-meter across the battery terminals on Volts mode. You should read about 13 volts. If this is the reading then it's more likely to be the strarter motor. However, before forking out for a starter motor, check the battery terminals. If they have a bluish deposit on them, then its copper sulphate and they need cleaning. If it's a white powder, you probably have aluminium terminals and its aluminium sulphate. Either will b***r up your connection.

If this is the case clean them with sandpaper and dab a bit of dialectric grease on them. If you don't have dialectric grease use vaseline.

If this doesn't work you can remove the starter motor and test it independently by passing the 12v from the battery directly to it's terminals to see if the throw gear is working. It pushes the flywheel gear into contact with the flywheel. If that doesn't work buy a new starter motor.

Which specialist was it? That sounds pretty high if it was just a basic oil service along with the pads and discs.
