He’s a rare commodity in this league a goal scorer in midfield he is our X player the one player that can win a game from nothing.
 
Feels like he's stepping up this season.

Almost as if he knows he needs to be one of the 'leaders' this year. Especially with so many youngsters in and around the group.

He's definitely first name on the team sheet in regards to the attacking positions. When he's not playing, we suffer.
 
I take no credit for this analysis as it was Dana on boro breakdown who said it but her take was that in possession last season we were playing a 325 but had changed this season to a 424 but went back to the 325 against Southampton, and presumably last night.

That being true you would assume it was an attempt to be more solid at the back but it hasn't worked and just made us less effective in attack. Maybe it explains why he was struggling to find a role for mcgree early doors and after the sheff wed game he finally gave up and went back to last seasons set up.

She is spot on and Carrick was getting stick for not changing his tactics and being inflexible when in fact he had.

I think it was more to accomodate two wingers, so he didn't want the full backs bombing on as much and in particular the left-back like Giles did (or maybe he thought he didn't have the personnel).

Last night we were playing a 2-2-6 at times, with Smith/O'Brien advanced as wingers and the two centre halves deeper - helped by Bradford totally backing off us and not really pressing
 
McGree and Hackney offer different things to the team but both compliment our team and are essentials. From our squad as is, I would say in my view, the following 9 are should plays in the league when fit based on very recent games

Smith
Lenihan
Fry
O’Brien
Howson
Hackney
McGree
Jones

Then perm any of these to add to to make up numbers, or fill in if above are injured, suspended. The biggest issue is still striker and 10 for me…….
