Mbappe 98 min penalty

yes its a FA / Prem guideline. some bloke on 5 live basically said they are given every week on the continent.
Jeez, that’s farcical if stuff like that is a penalty everytime on the continent. If a ball deflects point blank onto your hand / arm it’s a penalty? utterly ridiculous that. I’m glad we don’t have VAR in champo with our version of it and am even more glad if our rules / interpretation was like that.

Somehow stumbled upon a podcast recently that was hosted by a Geordie lad, plus an Irish Newcastle fan, a few other Skunks and a Boro fan who was from the Durham area.

They talked about their greatest ever moments as fans. The Boro fan cited lifting the cup and the two Maccarone moments, as you’d expect, and also mentioned the Robbie Fowler penalty miss to qualify for Europe.

The Geordies had a few different ones. A couple said beating PSG in the CL group game they probably won’t qualify from.

Two of the others said the Tiote equaliser v Arsenal. 🤣. Apparently “all Newcastle fans say this”.

One even said Mike Hooper saving a Jurgen Klinsmann penalty.

I did find myself feeling a bit sorry for them.

Me too. You just don't get that hope/worry that a decision might get changed for miniscule reasons. VAR refs have obviously been found out to be, well, just refs (people)
Keep it on the field, and chances are it will equal out over the season. And if it doesn't, well that's sport

Is it a handball if the ball deflects off a player's body?

In the current reading of the rule, yes, a handball is penalised regardless of deflection off another player's or the same player's body. However, some leagues have varying interpretations of the rule, and some are more strict about this than others.

According to the new Premier League guidelines which were released ahead of the 2020/21 season, deflections are not taken into account when determining if a handball offence has been committed. This explains why Newcastle United fans felt hugely aggrieved when Tino Livramento was penalised for handball in the dying seconds against Paris Saint-Germain: the penalty would most likely not have been given had it happened in a league game in England, but it's more commonplace in the UEFA Champions League.

This portion of the handball rule has been criticised as unnecessarily harsh, and could be reviewed in the coming years by individual leagues or IFAB, subject to change.

Well, I'm no fan of the Saudi backed Newcastle team, but that is an absolute travesty.
I mentioned about avoiding unnatural arm positions by putting your arms in an unnatural position behind your back on the VAR thread, but there should be no way on earth that blocking the ball with your body and the ball richocheting onto your arm is a penalty.

It’s true about the Tiote goal, I lived in Newcastle / Gateshead until from 2002 - 2019 and they must have talked about that game / goal for best part of 10 years afterwards.

I thoroughly enjoyed reminding them that their highlight from recent times was literally winning a point at home in a league game.

Penalty aside, Newcastle got absolutely battered in that game judging by the highlights. I've just watched 6 minutes of PSG missing sitters.

Anyone who says that Newcastle deserved anything from that game is deluded.

From the highlights I saw, it looked like Mbappe was spending too much time trying to score flair goals instead of just scoring.

Not seen the incident myself but UEFA have confirmed it was incorrect (due to the deflection).

Makes it all the more sweeter actually 👌
To my mind that just reflects badly on UEFA because there are so many changes and tweaks made to some laws that it’s nigh-on impossible to keep up with them. Nobody knows what a handball is. Well actually it was designed to stop people picking up the ball and carrying, to separate football from rugby.

When I was a kid you very, very rarely saw a free kick or penalty given for handball. Now there are multiple examples every single week.

Obviously it’s very funny it’s happened to Newcastle last night but let’s face it, that was an appalling decision and should never have been given. What is Livramento supposed to do? It’s mental. But the authorities have caused all of this. They are making top-level football borderline unwatchable.

Don’t sympathise with them. They wouldn’t us. As others have said, it could (and maybe should) have been a battering anyway. I did enjoy our 4-0 win and then flicking over to see their dodgy penalty on the news. Proper cherry on the cake.

Can’t wait for the wheels to fall off this whole Saudi thing. I pray that they remain trophy virgins until then.

I'm not sure where last night's ref was from, perhaps slightly different interpretation at domestic versus European level (although I agree that's not good).

Whilst the game has moved on from trying to differentiate itself from Rugby I agree that the constant tinkering is not helpful (and is magnified by VAR). At its heart it is surely about trying to gain an advantage by using a hand?

I think he’s Polish and he’s widely considered to be the best referee on the Continent.

Completely agree with your second paragraph, I just mentioned the rugby thing to show how far beyond that we are now. The overwhelming majority of handballs being penalised at the moment shouldn’t be given imo. It’s become farcical.

I think TV has a huge part to play in it. For decades they’ve slowed down incidents and used freeze frames to ask these types of questions - “OH, NOW, WAS THAT HANDBALL??” - and encourage us to criticise referees. I think this is sort of the end game of that line of thinking.
