Maybe we were too optimistic...

Unfortunately the reality of not going up last season is coming home to roost. As many said at the time we couldn't afford to not go up as a unique set of circumstances had propelled us into the promotion picture and were goal scorer extrodinaires. There was something very un-Boro about us last season and you had to really pinch yourself to believe it was real. People said well Carrick can do it again and we'll go up as champions, yet that is very difficult to do when you're literally back at square one and most of what got us to where were has been ripped up and shredded in terms of players leaving and the situation with Chuba. I am sure we can built back, but it will take time.

Someone the other day compared it to the 1997 relegation which is very true. Thoughts exist of what might of been, but there is no going back. That defeat to Coventry signalled the end point of the journey, just like relegation did in 1997 where a new direction was needed to get back to where we were. That's why there is outrage, anger and tears after the start we have had. It's the realisation of all of this.
Good post.

The club have openly acknowledged the need to move away from being so heavily reliant on loans, its in effect signing a load of players on a one season deal and offers little or no stability.

But it will take a bit of time to shift the emphasis towards permanent transfers, with a couple of loans on top, including the January xfer window, if we are there it thereabouts.

I can’t really reconcile why we were able to sign players like Giles and Steffen last summer but not this summer. We didn’t suddenly become a less attractive proposition this summer.

As for Ramsey and Archer, they weren’t “big proven names” when we got them. Archer had done well at Preston and Ramsey had been a bit average at Norwich as I recall. To a degree, we should take some of the credit for them being so good, but we could/should be able to do it with other players.

As for Chuba, it was a sort of freak season. No one expected him to be that good (and it started under Wilder not Carrick), and no one should have expected him to stay. Yes he’ll be very hard to replace, but it’s not as if he was way above our level all along.

There is no evidence we have actively gone out into the loan market yet. For example for a keeper we have bought players in. This could prove more profitable and more stable looking say 2 years ahead. There seems to be evidence we did bid for Giles, but he chose Luton and we are closing in a LB purchase, all be a bit late.

Totally agree with Para 2 and 3.

I do think the Club thought Akpom might stay with improved offer and for all we know he might although looking unlikely. So they have been slow buying in a senior out and out forward.

I do think we need at least 8 defenders in the squad and we only have 5 fit ones, we have been unlucky losing 2 right backs to injury at the same time and another defender injured. Probably need another 2 defender purchases if Coulson is loaned out and Clarke shows no recovery this month. A half season loan for Clarke's position would be sensible - a sort of Peltier.
