Matt Crooks

Howson / Mcnair and Crooks possibly leaving for nothing (next to nothing). How much to replace with as good or better? A few quid

So it's up to recruitment. To be fair it's massively improved over the last 2 years. So hopefully already identified players. I mean we've been trying to replace Howson for 2-3 years and not even come close.

How much would it cost to replace Crooks 6-8-10 goals a season? They don't grow on cheap trees (excuse pun 😂)

Need someone else to step up and be the video man on pre-season. Who is gonna take on that role? Luke Ayling if he's still here???

Seems a weird one, this. Like weird enough in how it's come out of nowhere but moves happen, but weirder the way the club are talking about it, between Carrick just openly saying it's happening in the press conference and the club putting on the official site that he's having talks in the US like a news site reporting an ongoing potential transfer, weird.

Not saying hide it necessarily, but just putting up an article on the official site about a move that hasn't been completed yet seems unusual for us to do.

Look at the players we signed the summer we signed Crooks ... and we (me being one of them) moan about the likes of Silvera, Engel, Latte and Gilbert not been good enough signings through the door

Gutted about this. At the moment, if fit, he's in our first eleven for me, with McGree and Jones behind Coburn or Forss. He links the front to back and makes things happen. His timing into the box is great, he slips little passes in behind, makes clever runs, is a great finisher, and has a telepathic understanding with Jones. He's a clever footballer, a great squad member with no big ego, on affordable wages, and I just don't see how the kind of money a US team will offer could tempt us to sell given the injuries we have and having just sold Rodgers.
Matt Crooks could easily have another 3-4 years in him because he had no pace to lose. His game is about guile and timing. We keep the likes of Greenwood and Silvera and sell Crooks - just don't get it.

So much for people’s theory that it was a great transfer window as we’d banked the Rogers money and he wouldn’t get a game ahead of Matt Crooks.

The club have clearly given up on this season.

Real Salt Lake City….Matty, be ready with your bible fella as you’ll be expected to be in church on Sunday and make sure you take your gun with you to church.
Just like Boro really, it was parmos you needed to like here, your new destination is god n guns.
Not that much different 🤷‍♂️🤣

Am surprised at this. Some folks on here will be pleased though as he often seemed a scapegoat. Looks like it’s been a case of three in three out this transfer window.

I don't think it's about giving up on the season, sometimes it's about respecting a players contribution to the club and taking account of their wishes. He's reaching that age where he'll perhaps be looking for one last really good contract.

From Carrick's comments it sounds like Crooks has expressed a wish to talk to them as he probably never expected to get an opportunity to play abroad and fancies seeing what they have to say. I'm sure it's as much about the life experience as the contract on offer.

He's been a good servant and has been great for the club so they are not standing in his way, I'm almost certain they wouldn't want rid of him as he's a great squad player to have, good for morale and can cover a few different positions. Not to mention he only signed a new deal this season. If he goes it's the club doing him a favour.

Absolutely baffling this, he’s still very useful and the one player we have that can rattle into challenges.

I don’t really understand what the clubs ambition is for the rest of the season

Yeah, fair play, but competitive sport isn't about charity. We need him, he's under contract. I just think we've removed two of the few players we have who can make things happen in the final third. Crooks creates situations, and finishes situations. Rodgers did too. McGree does up to a point and Jones does but needs 'sympatico' players around him to help him make the right decisions. Who's getting the goals. Forss may finish, but who's creating? Greenwood? Greenwood just loses the ball most of the time. Azaz? So far he's flattered to deceive; looks like a Barlaser type, needing time. Hackney doesn't seem like he can cut it further forward to be honest. Silvera? Come on.
As other say, it looks as if, tacitly, we're letting this season go...

I like Crooks - probably not a starter but certainly better than many who will fill the bench. Will be sad to see ‘the tree’ go but bigger issue for me is this can’t have come as a surprise to a club that also sold Morgan Rogers and doesn’t appear to have a fit player capable of playing as a recognised front man that perhaps Crooks could have filled in at. Very odd

I would have been happy not to renew his contract last season and I was surprised we did (caveated with him being released because i would've expected an Akpom replacement). Not that he's a bad player but he doesn't really fit anywhere in our team. He did well in Wilder's setup as part of the 3 with 2 strikers ahead of him. He was never a 10. He can do some of the things like playing a through ball and getting on the end of things but he doesn't have the pace to make runs beyond the striker and he doesn't receive the ball and carry it forwards.

He was still our best option as a 10 but that says more about the others than him. He's clearly a massive downgrade on Akpom at 10. We're probably never going to get promoted with Crooks as a 10 so him leaving isn't a huge issue. The timing of it is concerning because we obviously can't replace him and we don't exactly have many options.
