Match Thread

Fully deserved - hats off to Warnock for getting them up.
Hats off to the players for fully applying themselves.
Great credit to Fletcher - cool set up for Assombolonga, then penalty take.
Shotton was very good at the back. Great save by the keeper.
Massive relief to win. Massive.

they are just replaying the highlights and that elbiow on Spense looks worse every time you see it, the millwall player looks like he purposefully ran across to him to do it as well

My last post was supposed to be at half time, didn't post for some reason. Anyway. Other than a stocky 10 mins just before and after our first goal, other than we dominated and were fairly comfortable.

Shotton had a great match, in that back 3, his tendency to wander out of position is less of a problem, particularly when he is the spare man. But for me, the man of the match was Howson, best passer in that middle area of teh pitch, won the penalty with a quick decision and perfect pass, he played quite a few other balls, particularly in the first 70mins that stretched the Millwall defence.

Good to see Dijksteel back as another option, because Djed is a 60-70min player at this point of his career.

McNair was better in that 3 central midfielders, and Britt always looks better as a 2 up front.

Keep playing this formation and players, and we might have enough to get out of this mess, without having to worry about Wigans points penalty

I've just been informed of the triple punishment rule, brought in last season. Basically a team cannot be punished three times which would have meant:-
1. a penalty.
2. a sending off.
3. a 3 game suspension for the player.

The ref was correct, but it was new to me too.

Great 3 points but why didn't we play like that last weekend.

1 game suspension for denying goal scoring opportunity. It can still be a red if no attempt made to play the ball. If the ref decides it was a genuine attempt, he can't be booked either, so he must have decided it wasn't a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Thanks for clarifying W_O_W (y)

Amazing how few people knew the rule changed in December, including the commentators

He made absolutely no effort to play the ball, it was still a red even under the new rules.

But I'm not bothered now, Millwall still have Hull and Huddersfield to play and I'd sooner they had a full squad to hopefully beat them.

It's good to actually not have a single player to complain about, everyone did a job.

Stojanovic - 8 - World class save, and a great improvised save with his feet. Released the ball quickly, and against a physical side put himself up for plenty of high balls, catching and punching well.

Fry - 8 - Kept a close eye on Smith, stayed on his feet, made sure the lad could never win an uncontested header. Kept his passing simple.

Shotton - 9 - Superb display at the back, cleaned up every second ball off Smith, didn't go wandering upfield, played it simple and in his comfort zone, much better

Friend - 7 - Kept it simple, didn't get pulled out of position, didn't dive in, and didn't leave space behind him

Djed - 8 - Great first half, understandably quiet second, really pushed the Millwall winger back to help their LB who couldn't cope with him

Johnson - 8 - Some great underlapping runs and good quality into the box. Is much more comfortable as a wingback than a LB, or even Left wing.

Howson - 9.1 - Man of the match, sat deepest of the midfielders, but got his head up and started attacks with some great balls into the channels, and the pass of the match for the penalty

Saville - 7 - Steady, lots of running, won some good 50-50s, would like to see him get into the box a bit more, but can't complain today

McNair - 7 - Same as for Saville, competed, and his height and heading in the centre won us a lot of ball

Britt - 7 - Worked hard, nearly got the end of things a few times, but he held it up, gave the defence a breather and didn't over play it

Fletcher - 9 - Assist and a goal, should have got their man sent off too, you can't ask more from your forward than that.

Tav - 7.5 - Had the beating of their defence for pace, looked strong, that ball never went out, he would have had a good chance to score or set one up. Worked hard tracking back too

Clayton - 7 - steady and simple

Dijksteel - 7 - a bit rusty but a welcome return

Warnock - 9 - Learned from the last game, picked the right formation, and players in their best positions.

dont agree about Howson, he was ok but not better than McNair for me but hey opinions differ and we won so I am a very happy ooo today

I didn't rate McNair today.. turned his back on a great chance to release at 0-0, poor finish at 0-0 and generally his passing was mixed.
That's clearly just me though and nothing against the lad.

he faded second half but I thought first half he was great. True he did miss a great chance but that free kick he took was a bullet.
