Masters of the Air

Listen to the Dan Snow podcast about MOTA for accuracy. It seems like they went to extra lengths to make it as accurate as possible
Yeah it got mentioned earlier so I'll look it out. I don't have a problem...none at all...so long as it's accurate. Its the general mis-representation of facts in american films to promote a pro-US narrative that winds me up.

A good ready about the story behind it - contains spoilers!

I daren't read that now you've said it contains spoilers; Do the Allied Forces win? ;)

On a serious note, I'll read that link after I've completed the series and thanks for the 'spoilers alert.'

I am really enjoying it.

Agree it doesn't come close to BoB. Not sure why, like someone else has said, I could watch BoB every week and still feel like it has my complete attention.

Has anyone ever visited the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln?? We went a couple of years ago and was blown away by some of the features and displays. Real life conversations with pilots amongst themselves, stories of the pilots, even tongue in cheek jokes about having other pilots bacon rations if they didn't make it back from bombing raids. It was an absolutely thankless job and ultimately the service was vilified as it became apparent that innocent people including children were dying as a result of the air raids.

BoB didn’t grip you until a few episodes in, this is the same.

6 episodes in what the opinion now.

I think it’s been done really well to convey the vulnerability and sheer claustrophobia of being inside those b17s

I am loving it - what I am not loving is waiting a week for the next episode!! I initially thought that they were rushing their way through these raids but then gave myself spoilers by reading through the true events online. It is all lining up really well.

In the meantime, I have bought A Wing and a Prayer, Harry Crosby's (the air sickness guy!) version of events. It arrives on Wednesday!

I watched the first three episodes and decided to wait until they are all available before watching.

I've just read this little bit of trivia - Flight scenes were filmed in replica B-17s using technology known as The Volume (used on The Mandalorian (2019)). The B-17s were suspended 50 ft in the air on a gimbal inside a 360-degree stage of seamless LED panel screens and ceiling. Actors could therefore react to flak explosions, crashes and planes flying in real time as the gimbal simultaneously reacted to scenarios.

I think this is really good. The thing with band of Brothers is the subject matter is familiar to everyone. Normandy, battle of the bulge, concentration camps etc. it's less familiar to us what happened in the pacific and although air stuff has been before beyond a few well travelled stories like dambusters, it's not as familiar territory.

I am enjoying it though - the girlfriend had never seen band of brothers or the pacific so we've been through Band of brothers last week and on so 7 of the pacific now to kill some time between episodes of Masters of Air.

I tried this - all I got was a loud of mouth about "loving war stuff". So I happily sit and watch it alone! :)

Poor to see yet another needless dig at the RAF from a hanks Spielberg production but I guess it’s no surprise.

It looks like the great escape might be getting rewritten next week as the camp they are at is stalag luft III the home of Tom d*ck and harry.

As history note

Whilst the movie makes out that it was a small group of mainly American airmen who were part of the breakout, in fact over 600 prisoners were involved in the construction of the tunnels and whilst U.S. airmen did act as lookouts, they were all transferred to another camp months before the escape actually took place.

So let’s see what happens next week

I was going to wait until they were all available, but me and my wife found quite a few things we'd like to watch on Apple TV and signed up. Masters of the Air is superb so far and although I only have one episode left to watch until I need to wait for further ones, I'm glad I started with it.

I found the books which the Pacific was based upon very interesting and have no doubt that I'll end up getting the ones linked to this series too. Last night I was looking at the Thorpe Abbott museum and have a feeling that it will be a very busy place this coming summer.
