they shot real life sequences in The Pacific and then supplemented with CGI to make the scale look much bigger.
Interesting titbit about scale - I did a fairly big budget war series once and for one of the major beach landing sequences, there was about 25 extras.

The camera is doing one of those long ‘following the actors who are talking down the beach in a single shot’ shots. The extras would walk across the frame, change jacket or grab a rifle on the other side, walk back, put a helmet on and limp back across; and keep doing that with variations to give the illusion of hundreds of people.

Worked quite well. They fattened up the background with CGI ships and planes and stuff.

I know some people who were in The Pacific too as full time background actors. Sounded awesome, months of shooting just running about being whatever soldier they want you to be that day.
