Mason Holgate on loan to Southampton

I agree with the clubs seeming new philosophy of abandoning the reliance on loans players and looking at the longer term plan of developing our own younger players

I know most fans want to live in a cuckoo land where we can compete with relegated sides and overpay for average players, but havent we already gone down that road
or does everybody have amnesia from the last time we got relegated and spunked the equivalence of 10 years champo income on a load of overated potatoes?

I was at Everton's first post COVID home match (against saints funnily enough) and Holgate gave one of the worst performances first half I've ever seen from a pro. Looked like he didn't want to be there at all and the crowd, all of them, were ferociously berating him.

Holgates salary this year is 3.6 million a year

So i would imagine saints are paying most of that

Whats that, half of the season ticket income at Boro?.............for an average centre back?

Really?

I suspect Southampton will pay him a lot more than we can.
It's a loan so he won't be getting paid more than the contract he's already on. You don't attract loan players by paying them more, you do it by paying their parent club more and then offering guaranteed game time.

how does that at all render what he said incorrect?

If hes on 3.6 million a year and southampton can pay it then obviously they can pay him a lot more than we can

Thats probably a quarter of our wage budget on one player

That's about 60K a week. Can't believe he is on that much, as a centre back. Mind you, Maguire is supposed to be on 80K a week! Crazy what these agents can extract out of clubs for fairly average top flight players.

Maguire is on far more than 80k amazingly.

Every player loaned or bought by a championship club someone comes on here and says we should of got them,we should have 120 players now.

Because nobody is paying him. Everton are being paid.

Everton are desperate for cash. There's nothing saying that Southampton have offered 100% of his salary.

I'm not questioning whether we should or shouldn't have been in for him (we shouldn't). I was merely commenting on the fact that people regularly comment on a player choosing one club over another and they often mention how we can pay more than others but it is irrelevant with a loan because the player doesn't get any of it. They're already guaranteed to get 100% of their existing salary.

Not sure what pount you are making here. Southampton can pay the player his wages that we cant. Thats the point.
