Marten De Roon starts for Holland

Could have been brilliant for us if he'd been used properly and played alongside Clayton as part of a two.

He was really unfortunate to sustain that injury vs Stoke, as by the time he'd returned we had switched to a midfield three and he was used as a box-to-box midfielder.

I can't remember anything of him other than that header against City. I genuinely think if you asked most Boro fans name 15-20 Boro midfielders and he wouldn't get mentioned.

It's hard to remember anything good from that summer recruitment. Negredo / Valdes/ Baragan and Fisher..... Jesus😕. They all left within a year.

I grant you he's decent now.

Hindsight's a wonderful thing ...did bang average stuff here..........but people base it on what he went on to...he left & joined a v good side again & picked up where he left off for them ?

Says more about him really!!!

Disagree Benjiboy. Maretn de Roon is a great player and has consistently been so (and also a wonderful person). I SO wish it would've worked out for him at Boro, and maybe we could have built a side around him
Hey ho

At Boro he ran around like a headless chicken most of the time. We know the recruitment was poor and he maybe might have looked better had we bought better. He has improved though from the player i saw home and away that season. I think the ‘wave breaker’ nickname was not a deserved one at Boro.

He was a good player before and a good player after. So? Injury didn't help but he looked one a the few quality players we had that year.
Anyway he has my ears, so I love him just for that 🙀;)

He was our best midfielder in a side littered with rubbish and managed by an incompetent. He's a decent player.
This.

We had a great Championship team, that was dismantled and filled with turgid players. If you are Spanish enough you are good enough seemed to be the approach. De Roon was good, but it was hard for anyone to shine in that side.

Class player in a bad Boro side, such a let down that season, playing for 0-0 and hoping to sneak a goal in the last 5 mins..... boils my blood thinking how inept we were, sure Karanka learned a hell of a lot about tactics in that season... De Roon was a bright light, Valdes was a disgrace

I'm replying to my own post.... I forgot about Brad Guzan😕. A Truely memorable transfer window (let's not forgot we bought Rudy in the Jan).

A very well thought of player for Atalanta and played a big part in their Champions League run during 2019/20. If we had stayed up I think he would've gone on to become fans favourite.

I rated him at the time just think he struggled to form a partnership with anyone as our midfield constantly changed.

Agree with that.
Strangely, his season with us was his best scoring season ever. To do that in a struggling team tells me he was being used in a different role to his normal role for Atalanta or Holland.

He did increasing seem to play a number 10 role as that season went on, and was still one of our better performers. I take that as evidence that he was actually a very good player, played in the wrong role.
