Mark Viduka (!) on Sky Sports this morning

He said in the interview that we'd ummed and ahhed all year about offering him a new contract. He scored two against Fulham in the last game of the season, and only then did we make him an offer. I got the impression it wasn't particularly about the money, it was more the way he'd been treated by the club.
We do some particularly poor managing people, both that we want to keep and want to get rid of.....see also the Downing fiasco during TPs time, how we ultimately ditched Southgate and the mixed messages about Paddy Bamford. NW seems to know how to handle people, look at how he took no nonesense from Gestede and massaged Howson and McNair's egos.

Schwarzer said the same about his treatment, a few players complained about contract renewal discussions and about feeling the club didn't show any kind of thanks for the effort they had put in. The club only sent a hand typed note about 6 months after he left and it was as basic as could be, very impersonable.

It's counter productive to treat any player badly when they leave. Those players mix with other players, and may bad mouth the club. Better to see them go elsewhere, fail, and wish they had stayed with us. That's the message we want players to share.

It seems that very few players and indeed managers seem to have that great relationship with the club after leaving, maybe with the fans, but not with Gibson et al.

All of those would be first choice central striker in our current team, crazy times.

Even Nemeth whose best position nowadays would be right of a three.
Nemeth would get 20 goals in the championship. In fact a front line of Job, Nemeth and Graham, arguably the worst of those, would probably smash this league in a 3.

I chuckle and sigh when I look back at the players we had during that period. When people say Viduka was the most frustrating player, I disagree as I believe they all were frustrating.

That forward line should have achieved more, FA Cup (semis), UEFA (won't whinge about that) but league position of 14th with 28 home goals and season ticket thrown at manager was not good at all.

Amazing that we had those players all on the field.
Just one of those strikers and we'd be in the playoffs at least this season.

Didn’t Schwartzer say he wanted to move to London for his kids schooling though as I seem to recall this and pretty much dialled it in in his last few months.

Viduka‘s touch was superb, he was top quality.

Just seemed to be injured a lot although I’ve been in trouble before on here for saying that.

He did nothing when he left us so probably right decision to let go in 2007.

I liked him overall and would add he was very skillful for a big guy, but he was injured a lot, and somedays did not look as interested as he could have been. Remember him throwing kisses to fans booing him after a 4-0 home defeat to Villa in 2006.

He also was relelgated with both Leeds and Newcastle, both clubs should be not getting relegated.

We should have held on to Yak longer as he was younger. Not sure what went wrong there.

Didn’t Yakubu have malaria which kept flaring up or something? I’m sure there was a background issue?
