Makems obsession

No wonder they are so obsessed with attendances….. look at the state of these ‘news’ articles in their local rag. 2 days in a row.
Still, at least they aren’t interested in little old insignificant us…..

(disclaimer - I don’t read this *****, it just came up on my ‘newsnow’ search for ’Middlesbrough‘. )

We would do exactly the same if we had a ground that big, and got crowds like that.

As bad as the Gazette can be, I doubt it would’ve printing stuff referencing Sunderland in the title, if we were getting bigger crowds or atmosphere. It’s all just a bit small time.

We constantly have posts on here about how good our away fans are, how many we took, what's our average, how noisy we were, how fast we sell tickets, how far we have to travel etc.

We don't bang on about home attendances because our club would rather maximise revenue than attendance. If we were selling out every week then you can guarantee that there would be posts about it every week.

If we got 40k a week, we'd broadcast it because its impressive; Partly because they've had crap footy for years, partly cos of ticket prices, recessions etc and because the rest of the country are struggling to fill their grounds, so for Sunderland to get figures like that then fair does, they're awful horrible scruffy smelly disgusting people - each and every one - but they manage to wrangle 40k of them every other week, i wish we could persuade 30k of the wonderful residents of Teesside every other week to come to watch us. It is small time, but they've been crap for years and that crowd is impressive, so they should be proud.

My point was more about the media coverage of it, and naming us directly in the headlines, rather than their fans discussing it on forums.

Maybe it’s not clear because the link image I posted doesn’t show the full headline, but in each of the articles, Middlesbrough are mentioned in the headline/title. That’s kind of the point I was trying to make -

How Sunderland’s staggering 40,851 attendance against Coventry City this weekend compares with games at Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough and Derby County

and

How Sunderland's atmosphere compares to Sheffield United and Middlesbrough - thousands of fans vote

Whist it's impressive and worth a mention every now and again. It does get boring.

It's the usual suspects. 'we'd take more' FC in Newcastle / Leeds and now Sunderland. I get they get big crowds. Yet don't bang on about it every 5 mins.

It's daily on twitter. 'we have more fans than you'. And? 😂

We’re not talking posts on soc media though we’re talking articles in the local press.

What else have Sunderland got to talk about I suppose?

We live in a very socially deprived area and the cost of living is ridiculous at the moment. Attendance at the weekend was good taking those into consideration.

Attendance is a weird things I’m a season card holder and have been since the riverside opened I go to all cup games and friendlies I can’t go any more and it will be the same for many on here and thousands others.

so how can I make attendances higher.

That’s why it’s such a pathetic thing to talk about.

It’s like going on holiday abroad and some one asking you when you got back how was it ?

and you start by saying it was great the plane was completely full

Or we’ll it’s wasn’t as good as I was hoping as there was only 200 on the plane and it holds 350.

I don’t disagree that it’s a fantastic attendance. It’s the obsession with it that’s tiresome. It’s understandable the fans obsess about it though, when even the local rags are banging on about it.

Tickets way cheaper, lots of freebies as well, and a city twice the population of Middlesbrough - can’t think why they get more than us 😵‍💫
Fair play to their owner then, making football accessible for their fans while our owner prices thousands out of watching the club they support

Taking into account catchment that's the equivalent of an 18 to 20k crowd at Boro.
So not bad, but nothing to shout about.
And talking of shouting, the atmosphere was subdued at the SOL by their own admission.
