M + S in the Boro shutting

This is really bad news for an already depleted town centre.

I was in the town today and the only people in the Cleveland Centre were only there to get warm, and very few shoppers about. I popped into M & S to get a white shirt for a funeral and came away empty handed - very little choice.

What is there to draw shoppers into the centre and Middlesbrough Council have decided to charge for parking. I understand the reason but is this the right time?

I heard of this a few years ago from an employee of M&S, not good news for an already desperate town centre.

We're definitely using the American model for the development of our retail sector, which is such a shame.

It's time for the local authorities to get involved and make sure cheap public transport is available for those without access to private vehicles.

What a ridiculous country we've become.

Sad.
However, I'm at a loss to understand why anybody goes to Teesside Park for retail.
Lack of an alternative is the problem. In Teesside that is.

I can pop out of the front door and be on a bus direct to Newcastle. I can't do that to get to Teesside Park. I'm lucky in that respect.

When I worked in M & S years ago it was the food that was propping up the rest of the store. I don’t think the town centre location is great for food shopping so probably struggles, especially compared to Teesside park in which was always one of the highest earning stores in the region.

No direct buses from Teesside to Newcastle anymore excepting National Express.
