Anyone else go last night?

Didnt find it as wow as 2019 when I last visited with projected whales jumping in and out of the Wear and a giant snow globe.

This year once you walked through the Cathedral you were then forced to go on a long river walk as you exited via the back of the building at which some points were very narrow and not very well lit.

But something different to do with the partner. Im sure Mr Wetherspoons takings will be well up on a usual November weekend, there wasnt an empty table in the place!

Anyone going i suggest you try and get in the Sands car park then youre a 2 min walk from quite a few of the installations

Couldnt resist getting my sharpie pen out my pocket .. rather childish i know 🤣

I remember some years back when I worked for the Youth Service that they held a Lumiere evening with kids walking up Roseberry Topping with lanterns.

I do think Middlesbrough could copy this and attract visitors to Middlesbrough.

What a misery. Am going tonight, looking forward to it. Always an exciting night, something very different to look forward to.
It wasn’t a case of being miserable, it was the first one I had been to and I was so looking forward to it. But all 6 of us that went found it very disappointing and not what we were expecting. We had expected it to be far better than just a few light shows here and there, interspersed with long walks and not much organisation in where to go. It could have been so much better and the general consensus amongst us all was that we wouldn’t return again.
Everybody is entitled to an opinion whether good or bad !

Fair enough and my opinion is you are a misery.
Lol.;)
It was great last night. Totally free light show extravaganza.
What else do you get for free these days

We went last night, just after 7:30 when you didn’t need a ticket, and the queues to get into the cathedral were so long it reminded me of airport security queues. Expected more in the cathedral, and I agree that the forced walk by the Riverside Walk was quite poor. As we were on the train, we decide that we had had enough and went back to the station.
we could see that the routes in at 9:30 were much quieter, so I would advise anyone going tonight to go a bit later and avoid the queues.

Great pics, Dave C! You saw more than we did.

We parked at the Sands Car Park and just walked around the immediate area then headed upto where wetherspoons is then the Market Place, then the Cathedral.

After the detour along the river looking at the Batman Signal 🤣 we then found ourselves pretty much back where we started (Radisson Blu hotel) but discovered we had missed a section of the display near the Uni.

Last time i went you werent forced on a River walk you came a different way out of the Cathedral and walked over a footbridge (Kingsgate?) across the river in a totally different direction to this year (im not familiar with Durham City itself)

Odin's Glow in Newton under Roseberry was pretty cool, haven't been for years so I don't know if they still do it or even if it was a one off event.

Edit - it was in 2009 and I think it was a one off event

I think this year was one of the better ones as the installations were closer together again and there was a route of sorts to follow.

IMO the 1st year was the best & most inspiring with an installation around every corner & them all building up to the Lindasfarne Gospels being projected onto the Cathedral. I'd never experienced anything like it & was really bowled over. The success lead to over crowding and meant they went too far the other way in subsequent years really spreading the installations out and the forcing people to tramp miles through a damp dark city, the wonder of the last piece fading to a distant memory just as they reach the next, ultimately to say 'oh is that it'.

Rumours abound that this year is the last one due to funding cuts at the council.

Oh right a freebie to a FREE event. Well done on that
Of course there are 'freebies' for the great & the good. Gold tickets for VIP access to the central area, purple tickets for that and a mulled wine & mince pie to warm up after.
