Love this photograph

what a great photo. Why were short trousers a thing?

Was it economic? - material cost
Was it practicality? - wrecking the bottoms in sh1te
Was it a control mechanism? - keeping the young poor in their place?

I found this picture on the internet whilst looking for something else. It reminds me so much of my childhood playing football on the corner of Napier Street and Redcar Road, South Bank. Note all of them are in short trousers and they aren't football shorts.

**** me Norman, you are this old? Do you use Oil of Ulay (or Olay as I believe it is now known, and not just in Spain) 🤣

Very sneaky, playing in his dad’s size 10 work shoes 😅
He must be from Grangetown, they all went to school dressed in Army surplus, that brings me round to this little story. 🤣 🤣 🤣

I was once in The Cleveland Bay, Eston and a bloke (Rip McElvaney) was telling people how he had to go to school dressed in army clothes.

Another bloke replies most kids went dressed in army surplus after the war, it was the norm.

Yes, he replies, but it was no fun going dressed as a Japanese General. 🤣🤣🤣

NC I was brought up in Grangetown as I’ve explained before, a few doors away from Rip and his family. Mick was more my age. I was in short trousers in fist year in secondary school. Never bothered me until the older girls started to take the xxxx! I begged my mother to get some long trousers. It didn’t take me long to scuff the knees out of them. That’s why she kept me in shorts as long as she did🤣

I know or knew all the lads and used to regularly have a pint with Mick. Rip was a funny man and John was always the quiet one out of them. One my favourite stories about them was when Brian was working away with Rip and staying in digs.

Brian was reading the rules of the B&B on the back of the room door and says 'I'm not staying here, you have to be in before the landlord, how do we know when he's coming in and starts kicking up a fuss.

Rip asks where it says that and asks Brian to read it out. Brian reads the following 'All guests have to be in before I am' and carries on his rant.

Rip goes over to read it and it says 'All guest have to be in by 1 a.m.' 🤣 🤣 🤣

Reminds me of my younger days in Warrenby the only difference being is that we didnt have a ball,
we only ever had tins to kick around.
It seems that all my early childhood memories are in gloomy black and white and saw colour for the
first time when we arrived in Oz in 62.
