Lost points

Anybody got an idea how many points we’ve lost from mistakes this season that should never happen? We were away Derby and Preston so those two stick out. Norwich away, Sheff Wed at home, Monday just gone and I seem to remember us conceding an awful goal at home by trying to play it out from the back to a midfielder with two men on him, had the restart then pretty much the exact same thing happened but can’t remember who that was.

If there’s a table for it I suspect Boro will be top comfortably.

From the top of my head:

Portsmouth at home
Derby away
Preston away
Norwich away
Cardiff at home

Then it’s the games where ricochets and deflections have gone against us:

Both Sunderland games
Sheffield Wednesday

16 points as mentioned wouldn’t surprise me.

And Bristol city at home where we set up their goals, we worked out on way home from preston approximately 18 points, all subjective of course.

Bristol City wasn’t it?

We’ve dropped 19 points from winning positions this season.

I’m not sure where we are currently on the table, but Sky Sports showed a graphic when we played at Hull a few weeks ago that had us 24th of 24 when it came to ‘defensive errors leading directly to goals conceded’ - though annoyingly I haven’t been able to find this graphic or stat anywhere online since then.

I'm going to take the RG own goal as a defensive mistake rather than deflection, imo he had time to avoid it or be in a better position, he could see the ball all the time.

I have a bit of a problem with the words "should" and "should never".

Ask opposition fans and they'll probably identify the majority of goals we've scored as "should never have happend". All fans think the same: all the goals we concede are down to us, and all the goals we concede are down to us too.

That said, we've scored the first goal in 18 of our matches this season, and failed to win 7 of them which is unacceptable. That doesn't include the Norwich match of course, which is another big lead lost. Controlling a game when we're on top is one of our biggest failings.

Aren't they just all the same points? How many goals did we score based on goals goalies should have saved or defensive errors rather than pure outright skill 1on1s or shots?

But you gained three points that you didn’t deserve against us so remember to deduct those.
Why’s that? In your home game you didn’t have a shot on target. To win a game you need to attack and at least shoot on target. So gaining 3 points we didn’t deserve are actually no true, if we hadn’t scored late in injury we would still have had 1 point, your Player of the match was your keeper so that tells you how he saved you from a larger defeat. Remember Hackney hitting the post S well. 3 well deserved points in my eyes

This thread shows it's not just unlucky, or a one off game here and there! It's several moments within many games, which proves we are consistently poor, and more concerning It's mostly against so-called poorer teams.

The worry is it wont improve anytime soon, we have RB whose legs have now gone, a LB who is not a LB, a CD who cannot make a simple 10 yard pass (yet he is asked to play that way), only one player in our midfield who can break up play and tackle, add to that a powder puff when out of possession Azaz.
All the above add to the reasons why we have the worst goals against in the top 7, 39 goals conceded,
Thats 20 more than Leeds, 17 more than Sheff Utd, 11 more than Sunderland & WBA, ( no point in comparing Burnley)

We had a January window to address some of these issues, a RB with legs? a box to box midfielder to help out Morris?, but no, we get two wingers and an attacking LB., that will really shore up our dodgy goals against column.

Our xGA is the 4th lowest in the division (and not that far off Burnley) yet our actual goals against is the 13th lowest which is another indicator that we are conceding far too many poor quality goals.

And all the rest scored against us have been worldies
I have a bit of a theory regarding the worldies that we concede.
We don’t close anybody down, it’s knife through butter stuff when we are defending.
Most games I watch us play nobody puts a tackle in or are close enough to their opponent to challenge them in that danger area where opponents can get a shot away.
Last season was worse to be fair, seemed every other goal against was a worldview.
Once again, Carrick hasn’t learned.
I said it yesterday regarding Watford at Sunlun,
big strong lads who can shield the ball from their opponents and are prepared to put a tackle in and harry their opponents into mistakes, we don’t do that hardly ever

I wonder if Sunderland fans would be sayign that? Let's take the last goal we scored.

Great strike from Hackney, but he got the chance from a player being closed down and dispossesed 25 yards out from goal.

If we'd conceded a goal like that, we'd have been complaining about unnecessarily giving the ball away trying to play prettyball 25 yards from goal, and putting it down as another defensive error.
