London stations

It’s the seventh floor actually.

I just disagree. You don’t have to be offensive and say things are “unnatural “ (I bet you wear clothes, and use a computer). You don’t have to insult people for choosing the vibrancy and excitement of a big city over the countryside. I love the countryside I just wouldn’t live there. Just try conceding that people like different things. For my life right now a big city is absolutely the right place for me
No intention to be offensive to you, apologies if it came across like that.

For the record you make a lot of good points and I really enjoy the countryside too.

Its just that I've turned into a fan of big cities, we've just moved and the missus wanted us to go down to the new forest but I convinced her to stay in London. If I move again it'll hopefully be to another big city

Acknowledged, it’s just there’s nothing like the North York Moors within a good few hours of London.
It seems like you just love the North York Moors - and more power to your elbow - but they can be great and so can London.

London can't compete with the NYM for Moors, but - Coronavirus notwithstanding - the NYM doesnt have the cultural life or the nightlife of London.

It would be a boring place if we all likes the same things. And if everyone hopes sticks to Helmsley
At the risk of repeating myself, I am not anti London it’s the way of living I don’t like.

I mean all that ridiculous overcrowding of people onto trains in tunnels deep underground standing nose to nose with a stranger for an hour with stale hot air to breathe - surely we can see something not quite right about that? Like rats down sewers comes to mind.

And small town above likes his apartment living but is 50 - 60 m2 on the fifth floor with safety windows really suitable for people?

If you stop thinking London and think about any mega city then you might understand where I am coming from.

I don’t just like the NYM, I like the Lakes, Scotland, Derbyshire, even parts of the south west are very nice, the south east coastline has its highlights too.

You greatly misrepresent urban life.

I live in a house in the borough of Lewisham, have a garden and it takes me 20 minutes to get to work on an above ground train where I regularly get a seat. I run around a park on a hill and go to farmers market every Saturday.

It's like me saying everyone who lives in the countryside sleeps in the same bedroom, hunts foxes, smells of manure and **** their brother. Of course it happens, but it's hardly representative!

Helmsley is a local town for local people. We do not want any jonnie foreigners here.

And - Free parking til March 2021
Must be desperate for tourists o_O

It is the only place I’ve seen a big issue seller with a brolly - last Friday

I’m glad you have a good life, it sounds like you are one of the luckier ones.

Waterloo is probably the most atmospheric main line station in London.
I can understand why Londoners would want to get out to the leafy countryside.....

Aah yes, “Metroland” as explained to us so memorably by the national treasure John Betjeman in his wonderful documentary in 1973.

I'd be interested to know what they were thinking because they were breaking tier 3 rules by travelling last night.

But nobody appeared to make any attempt to stop or to fine them and that’s been a big part of the problem throughout this pandemic; people do what they feckingwell want and they are rarely hit with any meaningful punishment. The fines are rarely given out and are comfortably low when they are.

The problem is that the people who follow the rules suffer a bit and for those who don’t follow the rules they just continue doing what they want and enjoying life as they want to live it and nothing happens. So then the virus spreads and the people who follow the rules have to suffer a bit more.

In reality, many may not necessarily be Londoners, they may well be northerners who reside there temporarily, that said, your last sentence (2 words) is correct. The Government have been totally naive at best though. I think the publics response was entirely predictable and should have been pre-empted. It lays down the groundwork to enable the Government to blame the public and dodge some of the blame. In truth, I’d sooner trust a chocolate fireguard to do its job properly. They needed to be draconian earlier in the week. They left the stable door ajar unfortunately.

Some families will live to regret this decision unfortunately and hospitals around the country will now be affected in all sorts of regrettable and unforeseen ways. Cancer treatment will be set back, operations put on hold, screening see longer waiting times as hospitals and their staff plan for covid increases that will inevitably follow. This madness is a long way from being done and some of the great British public do seem more bothered about Christmas dinner and a few after dinner mints, beers, wine and spirits than waiting a few more months till vaccinated.

Carry On Covid, Britains got your back!!

Very true, that.

Exactly. We have an acquaintance who lives on Tyneside who will be having eight people from six different households round for Christmas, some of whom will be staying overnight. One of them is a member of hospital staff (!), another a chef from rural North Yorkshire. If anyone is carrying it they will spread it like wildfire.

There’s more atmosphere on the Moon than in clinical, airport-like Euston. And to think what they demolished to build it in the mid to late 60s.
I know. I saw a picture of the original Euston once and thought “in what possible world could that be demolished for the current, looks like a gigantic garage, hideous monstrosity.”

London in general has a lot of open spaces, but the spread is a bit patchy. The solid middle class areas have lots of large parks like Hampstead Heath and Richmond Park with deer etc. Kew Gardens are very nice but £16 to enter. I like visiting London, because there is so much to see and do, if you like a bit of culture or entertainment.

However when I lived in central Croydon it was pretty awful. I can't remember a public park within 2 miles. There were Shirley Hills which weren't hills as we know in the North and contained a lot of fly tipping and dodgy going ons. The traffic was 5 times higher than Teesside and 100 times more than the North Yorks Village I was used to. For several weeks whan I first arrived I had a constant headache. I couldn't find anywhere to jog that was at all pleasant. On a Sunday I would sometimes drive into the North Downs to escape, but thousands others had the same idea and it could take 30 minutes to crawl a few miles

See loads of Londoners decided to flock to other area's of the country last night, so bringing the "new" virus around the country. Selfish TVVATS

That's because the trains were allowed to keep running by this inept national government. I would also imagine that most weren't Londoners.

At the moment - given that Kings Cross is a work in progress - The beautiful train shed of St Pancras is unique. I never thought the dirty, smoke = blackened roof and grimy platforms could be transformed into a palace:

London may be fine to live in, but the fact is, the population density, the vast transient tourist population and the overloaded infrastructure only helps to spread any virus that wants to infect unprotected humans not adhering to the guidelines.
