Local shops that stock Turntables

Looking for a turntable with preamp to plug into my Denon HiFi system. I am only looking to pay up to about £200.

I have tried Currys at Teesside Park, but they only have one on display as they have sold the rest off as they are having a refit in February.

Tried Richer sounds but they mainly just have higher end stuff above my budget.

HMV have a decent selection, but i was just wondering if there are any more shops i have missed in the area that stock them.

Rega Planar 1 could be a good one for you. Just over, but not much, more than your budget.
Not sure about local shops but there's one on the riverside in Stockton.

The former Shakespeare pub in Boro town centre is a hifi shop full of old turntables.

Looked at the Planar but is £100 over budget and doesn't have a built in preamp.

I will see if i can find out the name of that shop at the riverside,

I would honestly advise against a built in pre-amp unless it's a short term measure. It'll never be great although it will do a job

It's £50 over budget but fluance rt-80 has a built in one; £249 on Amazon. Parts can be upgraded some way later

Can't reccomend the ifi zen phono enough, it's £189 or so but you can get used for £80-90 and it punches above its weight to match stuff that sells for upper 3 figures to a grand.

Try look at 2ndhandhifi.co.uk if you don't mind used - they're based at Stockton riverside (same company as hifisound) - their stock may not be up to date but more importantly you can try stuff out and see how it sounds before buying and u seedy and where your money goes & what difference a cart, a phono, a speaker etc makes

I love vinyl but if you're going in at the very bottom end the quality isn't there imo. I enjoyed the experience with my budget setup but if j streamed the same track the quality was light years ahead. No longer the case now, but depends what you want etc

Hifi sounds does new gear too though if you don't want used

Thanks for all the info, i will take trip the the riverside store on Monday.

The RT-81 is the same price on Amazon as the RT-80, would i be better of with the RT-81.

I got one of these for my daughter for xmas and it sounds decent. Good reviews online for it
With that one did you have to buy an amp and speakers for it?

I presently have a turntable which is attached to a tape deck and CD player and two speakers that are hard wired and there is an amp attached.

I am going to build a cabinet to house the turntable one speaker and then have another speaker(s) the other side of the room. I want all the speakers to be Bluetooth so there are no wires.

The rt81 has rubber mat instead of felt, a better cartridge, both have built in pre-amps, available in white or wood finish and I think a solid mdf plinth instead of hollow so if it's same price then yes worth it

My advice would be to save up a bit more and get the rt84 or the rega p1 but both also need phono stages and above your budget but it's worth it imo to be in a better place sound wise than spend the lower amount and not be too happy with it

That's the route I went down and streaming the same songs I could hear a vast improvement on the stream - and I've got high end speakers, stereo amp, subwoofers etc. but once cry once as they say, by cheap buy twice.. but depends how much you want to spend on it as it's a rabithole... also why I think going somewhere like Hifi sound where you can listen to it directly and know what you're getting. If you're going to go down give them a ring first and tell them what your budget is and what you're looking to get out of it and they'll set some stuff up for you, it's a very different setup to richer sounds, it's literally like a museum in there in parts of it but great staff and lot of knowledge

Does your Hifi or an av receiver if you have one not have a phono?

Already mentioned but Fluance are good. I've got an rt82 into a denon amp and it sounds good. Usually retail 299 but I'm sure I paid less when I saw it on a deal.

No, my HiFi is a Denon S-81DAB and doesn't have phono as far as i can tell.

Do you have any experience with the Pro-Ject Primary E, it is very basic but has some good reviews on sound quality. Peter Tyson are doing the Phono version for £199, minus a tenner of for signing up to their news letter.

It'll be alright, project are a decent brand. Hifi sound seems to stock them so, again, I'd suggest seeing about going down and hearing the difference between that and the one above etc and seeing what their recommendations are

Bought it with Edifier R1855DB Active Bluetooth Bookshelf Studio Speakers but using it wired. The thing with gong down the Bluetooth wireless route is it digitises the analog sound you get from a turntable so effectively you may as well be just streaming from a sonos or bose streaming device.

Looks like we are a year away from lossless wireless audio

I am now looking at getting a second hand Pro-Ject Essential 3 with Acrylic Platter and OM10 and a separate preamp.

Anyone any experience of this set up, seems a good starter set up to me.
