Lifetime ban for man who invaded pitch on Saturday.

I've seen a lot of people criticising the clubs stance on this incident on the MFC Facebook post about it, lots of 'get a grip' and 'he was just excited we had scored' type comments.

However the club have repeatedly posted that they have a zero tolerance approach to people coming over the barriers so he can blame no one but himself... he's a grown man ffs.

To those who do think the club have been harsh, at what point do we go from a slap on the wrist to a season ban to a lifetime ban? Does a player/official have to be assaulted before they're not welcome back?
there were 25,000 other fans excited, don't see them on thepitch, I was excited isn't an excuse.

Yeah it's a fair point. I'd somehow missed the clubs zero tolerance stand on this.
Like you say no one can complain if they've already said this is what they'll do.

We had a spate of pitch invasions in a short space of time (mainly kids and people under the influence), to the point where the pitch invaders pretty much went unchallenged on 'the field of play' and so the pitch incursion team were created

This was when the zero tollerance message went out and a list of punishment to expect from carrying on to do so

You could argue that the offence took place off the pitch, but the guy has still had to jump a set of advertising boards to access the players celebrating.

It was a standard league game, its not like it was a last minute league Cup semi final winner or winning goal against one of our local rivals

What if he had been carrying a knife?

If he'd been carrying a knife, he'd be facing criminal charges, not just a stadium ban, not really sure why hypotheticals should come in to the decision.

Why should the game matter though?
You can carry a knife when it's a League Cup semi-final winner.

I think a ban of a few years would have been more appropriate, personally.

It's still a major deterent, but I don't think that incident was a big enough issue to cause a man who looks to be in his 30/40s to be banned from attending Middlesbrough matches for the rest of his life.

The Boro fans fighting outside the stadium at the end of that match haven't been given a public lifetime ban (they should be), as far as I can see, and that's a far worse offence.

His biggest problem will be trying to get a ticket to big matches with high demand like play off finals, cup semis or even premier league games. He won't be able to order himself, he'll want to sponge of friends, they won't give them up for those games.
I knew a guy who was banned from the Riverside and went every week, he even managed to get a ticket for Eindhoven.
Easy way to find out what "Zero tolerance" means
It's also something you would expect a teenager to do and not an adult.

I took that bit out of the post as highly unlikely, but you never know what peoples motives are in todays world sadly, but the guy was celebrating a late winner and is now going to pay the price for his heat of the moment reaction.

Im sure when the stadium first opened there were signs around the perimeter of the pitch reading 1k fine if you entered the pitch

It doesn't feel like a harsh punishment when it's dished out to fans who go onto the pitch as the game is being played, as those two idiots did when we played Birmingham a few years ago.

It does feel a bit harsh however when fans go onto the pitch in a moment of spontaneity, which I think is what you can class this as.

As he went to climb back over the advertising board he looked up and fist-pumped the air and I must admit, I was in North stand right in line with him and did it back. These are moments where you are in ecstasy but at the same time, I do accept that rules are rules. Just can't help but feel a bit sorry for the guy.

Did you notice Paddy shoved him away and wanted nothing to do with him?

I've gone to more matches than most over my lifetime, I'm also an impulsive idiot who's consumed alcohol before and at the match and can get very excited on occasions, but I've never ran on the pitch and not even considered it (OK there have been times where I've thought about laying an opposition player like Joey Barton snd fought the urge).

In recent years its become an epidemic. Just take a look at our uefa semi final win. I'm sure fans stayed off the pitch despite it being the most dramatic game some of us have ever seen, but in recent years people just think it's a thing you do.

The only way to stop it is zero tolerance, there was no need for him to go on the pitch, and as Paddy showed him, the pitch is for the players. Having said that sharing the video of him being pushed over is also embarrassing and further punishment.
