We played on the Attlee Rd School (Caedmon Primary School) fields from morning until night and when it got dark we would then move and make the goal under a street light that was near the school field.I love football. Loved playing football- not that I was any good, but that image of the six weeks holiday, getting up and running outside with a ball and playing nonstop (other than being shouted in to eat something) until it was dark, day after day, was my childhood really.
I just don’t identify with the players or, even less, with the fans.
The anger and mob mentality, it’s not for me.
We would get a brand new pair of baseball boots and a pair of Bobby washable jeans and a couple of T-shirts and that was our clothing for the six weeks. There were five of us, two boys, and how our mum got them clean and dry again for the next day was a miracle.
I remember I had the England kit which was a white thick cotton shirt with a three lions badge, blue shorts and white socks. I had the number seven sewn on the back by my mum, which caused me to look like Quasi Modo. She honestly couldn't sew a button.
