I’m not saying I actively want the Boro to sign this player, but the reaction to rumours and speculation is interesting. I’d love to see how those people explicitly saying they don’t want Lee Gregory would feel if Wilder signed players such as John Egan(Brentford), David McGoldrick(Ipswich, free), Oliver Norwood(Brighton, barely played, perennial loan player), Kean Bryan(Manchester City, youth with barely any senior football to his name) this summer.

His promotion-winning squad contained Baldock(MK Dons), Fleck(Coventry), Stevens(Portsmouth), Lundstram(Oxford), Basham(Blackpool), and others picked up from the benches of Birmingham, Derby and Brentford, and Boro(Cranie, Johnson). Some people might need to lower their expectations a bit IMO.

Players like Gregory might not set the pulse racing but it’s about building a team. We’ve had big expensive signings that have done nowt and set the club back years.

We’ve got a good nucleus to build on and if Wilder thinks there is business to be done in the lower leagues then his track record tells me we should let him crack on, and not get too bogged down with names and money and headlines.

Look at the Luton and Huddersfield squads this season, for example. You’d don’t need massive budgets and big names. You want good, clever coaching and sensible recruitment. That’s a big part of why Wilder has been brought in IMO.

Yes but a lot of them signings made were when Sheff United were actually in league 1 and , I wouldn’t be against signing lower league gems like he did with baldock, Stevens etc but we shouldn’t be signing a player who’s never really done it at championship level and has just dropped down too league 1 for regular game time and is now 33. I’m not expecting world beaters but i am expecting better than Gregory. I highly doubt there is anything in it. Will end up at Wigan or Sunderland

He’s building a team though. This group needs a handful of leaders adding to it, a good goalkeeper and a couple of good strikers. Those players can be found anywhere.

I posted about the list of top scorers a few weeks back, it was a mix of players picked up for a range of relatively low prices from all over Europe/the lower leagues of England. You’d get a lot of threads like this if Boro had signed one or more of them.

It depends what the manager wants because there are specific players for specific moments. You might want great pros, great trainers, who chip in here and there but set the standards each day on the training field. The Boro are probably a bit too soft and need toughening up a bit. Someone like Gregory might come off the bench 15-20 times and get 4 or 5 goals, winning 6 or 7 points, or even just hold it up a few times and get us up the pitch at the end of games. We didn’t have that last season.

I’m sorry Viv but I completely disagree with you on this one. We need better than Lee Gregory. Watmore and Coburn can be our goals from the bench men if needs be.

great point. As i was trying to argue on a different thread, with wilder its all about round pegs in round holes and players that can play specifically to his style and system. Shoe horning in a player just because they are a clamoured for signing who has done well elsewhere wont have the desired affect.

To be honest I think it’s just people wanting to talk football sometimes you can get carried away when commenting on a a thread. I will leave this one alone though now, think I have made my point
 
The written press are currently gagging for transfer news, collecting a name from almost anywhere to fill their rag.

Gregory is no where near being on an MFC recruitment list, if promotion to the Premier League is the target.

I get the principle, but think Gregory an awful example. He's crap.
 
Sheffield Wednesday growing in confidence he's gonna be staying, not pushing for a move.
Looks like we'll be looking elsewhere 😂
