If you had to choose one for us to achieve this season, which one would it be?

You can't say both 😉

League Cup win.

With the caveats that Carrick & Hackney are still here next season and we don't have the injury list from hell either. We'd stand a very good chance of going up next season if so, substantially more than we'd have of winning a cup next year or even in the next couple of seasons.

I guess the downside would be that playing extra games in Europe could have an affect on our league form, although it would be a struggle for us to make it out of the group in reality.

Trophy every single time.

Only thing that even slightly makes me hesitate is the fact that UEFA are always pushing for the League Cup to be scrapped and I'd probably sooner be promoted if England caved to the pressure straight after we'd won it.

I suppose it wouldn't make any difference to the sheer joy in February, or to the European football we'd earn, but the long term impact would be lessened if our trophy cabinet consisted of winning a defunct trophy twice.

Cup win. Definitely.

I remember this debate a couple of yrs ago.
One poster (can't remember who) preferred promotion to the FA Cup.
Their logic?
If we got promoted we would have a better chance of building a team capable of winning a cup.

If you're out there, please reveal yourself. I still can't work my mind around your reasoning.

We go up next year. So a goal against Chelsea works for me as a result

Chelsea/Liverpool final. How interesting

Not even close. We have won one trophy in our entire history. We've been promoted loads of times and definitely will be again. We could go another 100 years without winning another trophy. 100% I would choose a cup win.

I don't think either thing is going to be close to happening though unfortunately. We're actually better odds to be promoted than we are to beat Chelsea (8/1 v 9/1) and we're 22/1 to win the cup. If you're super confident there's a 206/1 for promotion and a cup win.

Promotion would bring week upon week of untold misery next season (see Burnley, Sheff U) so League cup win 100%. We would dine out on it forever.

In reality we have little chance of either.

Cup win, especially as we're so close. Promotion would definitely be through the playoffs and I just can't see us going up this season.

Yes, we'll probably have to sell Hackney as a result of not going up but that's our model isn't it?

I've always said promotion whenever these sorts of questions are posed. The finance "should" ensure that the parachute charged seasons following the inevitable relegation are then exciting promo chases.

However, the take over up the road at Saudi FC does change the dynamic, being able to say we won a trophy before them and their beheading overloads would be extra sweet!!

Cup win all day long.

Hate the Premier league, dislike the stop start VAR, and we would be in the bottom 3 all season, same as Luton, Burnley and Sheff Utd are now.....losing most weeks... the only advantage of promotion is parachute payments, which will come after the eventual relegation.

If winning the league cup meant never gaining promotion ever again....that would still be an easy answer.

Anyone choosing promotion over actual silverware needs to give their head a wobble.

Genuinely surprised I'm in the 11% in favour of promotion.

On a personal level a cup win would be fantastic, but a football club is ultimately a business like any other where success is measured in pounds and pence, so I'd go promotion every time.
